Woodend/Hesket took on Broadford at home coming up with a tighter than expected 26-23 win.
The Hawks were keen to add another win to their win/loss record this season. With Gemma out of the team, the girls welcomed 17/u players Madi Kleiner and Ali Cumming.
With a game already under her belt, Madi started on the court in GA, teaming up with Emma Cogger to shoot at 100-percent accuracy in the opening quarter.
The team was up 10-6 by quarter time with Amy Duff and Mackenzie Brown in fantastic form, pairing up in the C and WD positions with plenty of intercepts and tips, creating the turnover ball and start that was needed.
Woodend/Hesket's second and third quarters were again very disappointing as Broadford got on top. It struggled to find its way into the shooters due to the great defensive work of Broadford’s Ally Black, and found trailed by one at the final break – Broadford’s tails were up.
The Hawks knew that something had to change to get a win. Their defensive end was given a shake up as Gracie Reid (normally an attacking player) was moved into WD, Shae Denahy was moved out to GD and Jess Thorne into GK.
The aim here was to slow down the entry into Broadford's goals and it worked, limiting them to just seven goal attempts in the last quarter.
Meanwhile, in the attacking end, Macca and Amy teamed up in C and WA to create speed and space around the goal third with Madi and Emma working brilliantly in goals together to provide our feeders with options.
The Hawks finished as they started with a 10-6 last quarter to bring home the win.
Amy Duff earnt herself a best on court performance with the most turnover balls for the game – nine tips and intercepts for the game isn’t a bad effort for a C/WA player and her drive on to the ring was great to watch.
Madi Kleiner also had a great game, shooting 13 goals at 86-percent accuracy in only two and a half quarters of game time. In addition, her work out front and into Emma was fantastic. Mackenzie Brown continued her terrific season, solid in the WD and C positions, with plenty of pressure on the opposition and seven tips and intercepts for the game.
It can be difficult to maintain consistency when there are 10 girls to get on the court, but the girls need to work on this by increasing their concentration and awareness on court, no matter what the combinations are. This will be especially important over the coming month with known player unavailabilities.
It was a grind out win in the end and the coaches are proud of the girls for sticking together to get the choccies at the end of the day. Well done girls!
With Rockbank not having a 19’s team, Woodend/Hesket will face Rupo in its next game, so a big effort and a positive mindset at training over the next two weeks will be the focus. Go Hawks!
