With a slow start in the first quarter, developing the momentum in the attacking end was a struggle due to lack of multiple leads through the centre court. Rather than settling, positional changes were made. Gracie was rested within the first quarter and Brittany came on as WA.
Communication support was present at the quarter break, all players acknowledging more driving forward to the ball was needed. Macca was rested into the second quarter with Brittany taking the centre position while Gracie returned to the WA position.
It was in this quarter that the momentum appeared. Space was created due to multiple leads and passes being released at different times. Placement of passes into Tara’s positional hold enabled the feeders to deliver successful passes to her and scores were appearing on the board.
Maddy Staresina continued holding her position as GA into the third quarter. With the combination of Tara, Gracie and Brittany, the understanding of each other’s play was evident due to the defenders applying pressure and taking possession of the ball. Shannon was rested due to injury which allowed Macca to return to court in the WD position. The bacck-court remained strong with Ally and Abbey working tirelessly.
Tara was rested in the final quarter. Emma Cogger came into the GA position and Maddy went into GS. This was a first for both these players. This was Maddy's first full game for the season since having her baby, Lucas.
Maddy has worked hard and over the last three games and her game showed experience and calmness. This was the first time Emma and Maddy had played together.
Even though Emma only played one quarter, it was about beginning to understand the complexity of A Grade defenders and how she needs to play. The combination of Maddy and Emma delivered speed and experience.
Riddell took the win 63 to 43 as the A Grade team could not close the margin created in the first quarter. The court play by all team members throughout the remaining game was more productive and direct.
The Hawks players know how to play and know that every game in this grade has not been easy and it’s going to be continual hard work, playing a thinking game with great skills. Ladies, every game so far this season there has been passages of attacking and defensive success. Every training session and game we prepare for, we begin again .... and again. Go Hawks
