Under 17s
The 17’s girls continued their unbeaten run to beat the Sunbury Lions 58-8.
After a convincing 16-1 first quarter, we had the opportunity to try some very different combinations throughout the game with some funny looks as I gave the positional change instructions at each of the breaks.
Playing in different positions than usual provides an insight into their teammates roles and will give us options and confidence if we are forced into a difficult situation come finals time. The girls now know that they can play in those positions and in those combinations with great success.
Amy Duff had an outstanding game in the mid-court with intercepts and strong linking drives down the court and on to the ring. Alice Macdonald-Myers was strong in the WD and GD positions with plenty of turnover ball created from her clean intercepts, and Alison Cumming was in fine form in the WA and GA positions, coming off the back of her four-quarter strong interleague performance on the weekend.
We have a week off in the next round as Romsey don’t have a Division One team in the 17’s but this will give the girls the opportunity to refresh after a couple of recent niggling injuries. Go Hawks.
19 and Under
Coming off the interleague bye round, the Hawks 19’s girls didn’t skip a beat, with a resounding 55-11 win against Diggers. With Kate and Jess out, we welcomed Madi Kleiner on debut from the 17’s team. We have plenty of strong talent coming up from the juniors which is fantastic for the team and the club.
The team hit the scoreboard with a 17-4 first quarter and didn’t look back, scoring heavily with over 10 goals in every quarter and our shooters again very accurate at 87-percent combined efficiency at goal and rebounding the rare missed goal.
The team's focus at training this week was their defensive positioning and structure. The girls were able to put this into practice against Diggers to force a lot of turnover ball. It was a quick reward for their training effort.
I asked the girls to stay focused on their structure and stay disciplined in their movement down the court and approach to the goal circle to ensure consistency and continued effort over the four quarters. To the players credit, they did exactly that, ensuring that their defensive effort resulted in turnovers and the turnover ball resulted in goals.
Our defensive effort was outstanding with Shae Denahy providing plenty of excitement down back with plenty of turnover goals created off the back of her 11 tips and intercepts.
Macca was powerful in the wing defence position all game, with an incredible seven intercepts and 11 tips and a pretty clean game and Gracie Reid was instrumental on the goal circle edge with a disciplined game, teaming up with Amy and Madi in the mid court to make sure we goaled every time we got the ball down our end.
Well done girls, we look forward to the challenge of Wallan next who drew with Macedon on the weekend. Everyone needs to train hard with a team first mindset to get the best out of each other and their overall team performance next week. Let’s go Hawks!
C Grade
The Hawks were in for a good contest against Diggers Rest who played off in the 2018 Grand Final. The game was a great opportunity for us to see how we were travelling.
Unfortunately, we lost 29-40. However there is much to be gained from this loss. The team started well, applying pressure and patiently bringing the ball down the court and feeding the goalers well. We were only two goals down at quarter time. The second and third quarter were not our best efforts with Diggers taking a commanding lead and our team failing to build on our good start.
Credit to all of the team, who responded to a request to finish the game off strongly. We were playing for the Smith family with Sarah’s Aunty passing away that morning and we won the quarter 10-5.
We need to work on improving the fundamentals of our game – footwork, passing, dynamic leads and performing set plays.
Courtney Arthurson played her best game for the year, spending most of the game in WD, restricting her player and bringing the ball down the court. She transferred to WA for the last quarter and her calm presence on court ensured our best quarter for the game.
Hannah Toman also played her best game, splitting her time between WA and C, Hannah brings speed on the court and creates space and has improved a lot as the season has gone on. Monique Dean was excellent in GK, working hard against the goalers and providing extra support out of defence. Special mention to our goalers Alex and Louise who shot at a combined 91-percent accuracy, an excellent effort from both of them.
The next four weeks will see us take on teams which we have a good chance of winning against and will hopefully set us up for a great season. Work hard everyone, the rewards will come. Go Hawks!
