WOODEND/HESKET vs MACEDON
7. 3. 45 def by 14. 15. 99
Under the bright lights of Gilbert Gordon Oval, it was Woodend/Hesket hosting Macedon in a highly anticipated game for both clubs alike. Hoping to get their season back on track early in the year, the senior boys were driven to get this victory.
Early on it was a heavily contested duel with both teams hitting the scoreboard. Going into halftime there was real hope for a massive win at home in front of a huge crowd. But as the game developed, Macedon began to edge their way forward with numerous inside 50’s and quick, unanswered goals. Macedon departed Woodend as victors by 54 points.
Post-game we caught up with young gun Liam Bianco who had a few things to say:
“First quarter we started off poorly, Macedon had repeat inside 50’s kicking to their big full forward. It didn’t look too promising early when they kicked the first 2 goals of the game. But then we started to win the ball around the ground gaining some momentum and kicked the last 3 goals of the quarter to narrow us to down to only 1 point behind at quarter time.
The second quarter we were pretty much goal for goal, it was pretty even. They got a little break on us which gave them a 2 goal lead at half time. But in that second quarter we able to hit our forwards in Throppa and Wiz on the lead allowing them to kick some goals of their own.
Going into half time we were thinking we were well in the game, and I think maybe we thought that the job was sort of already done. That possibly lead to us starting the third quarter pretty slow, and because they already had the 2 goal lead they were able to pretty much just smash us. They were just dominating around the ball, dominating everything. We were hardly able to get the ball out of the middle of the ground, they were kicking easy goals and everyone’s head’s started to drop. They had a massive lead at 3QT and it seemed like we had all just basically given up.
The last quarter was basically just about getting a bit of pride back for the club. We said to ourselves that we can get on a run if we play the way we did in the first half and maybe get back into the game. Unfortunately we basically didn’t do anything we said we were going to do in the last quarter and just got smashed. They continued to kick easy goals, we kicked a few late consolation goals but we were just behind by too much.
We let another game slip, we could have beaten Melton last week as well and we could have beaten Macedon but after halftime our intensity dropped and that was the difference. We matched them in the first half but couldn’t do it for a full four quarters. I think it was more of a mental thing… we played half a game. “
