The club contingent departed Merrimac with Bocky in tears at the sight of Percy in a crisp clean white shirt and tie in the company of the very courageous Maree Walters and Steph Dicko who attended the very blokesy evening to celebrate all that is good with the AFLQ. Dale Perkins was opening coke bottles with his teeth and Tom Tarrant was breaking heads in the dunny and backhanding his girl in public for entertainment – his or ours we are not yet certain but Bob was trying to lure him to Catland. Lots of white shoes and accessories on show - and that was the blokes - and some fair imitations of a Brownlow entourage but none as glam as our Maree and Steph.
First cab off the rank was for the Magoos award, which was probably distorted by the participation of V Force and 16 man teams? Our man Sam Edwards was an
early leader but fell away as Matt Lethborg, formerly of Tasmania and now from Mt. Gravatt, overcame a final round challenge from 'Bulldog' Denne to win the award. Bulldog picked up 3 votes in a scintillating performance that rewarded his sponsors patience. Player Lethborg was profuse in his admiration for Bulldog's persistence and nominated him as the one to watch during the end-of-season trip to Bali. Last word was provided by Maree Walters who thought he was cute - Lethborg not Bulldog. The Syd Guilford award, adjudicated by perhaps knowlegable and independent observers, was won by David James, formerly of Hastings and now at Southport, with 36 votes. Tinker finished on 22 votes as Broadie's best performer, or was it Wade Dickson on 23 - the red wine took its toll.
Next came recognition of lifelong inputs by volunteers and administrators at both the the junior and senior levels which were accepted by Sharly Fraser from Bundaberg and Peter Butler from who knows where respectively.
This was followed by the rather doubtfully relevant Courier Mail Queensland Team of the Year selected from players who made their senior debut in Queensland and were resident here at age of 15. Luke McGuane, Nick Riewoldt and David Hale ensured some relevance for the Broadbeach crew. Equally irrelevant was the Alpha Sports nomination of Southport as club of the year.
The umpire of the year was awarded to number 9 , Ben Ryan. Perko was heard to remark "someone ought to toss him a ball to see if he knows what to do with it"
Dicko won the Zane Taylor Medal for the best afield in the AFLQ v WAFL game and followed up with selection at full back in the AFLQ team of the year. Tinker also made that team winning selection as a forward pocket/rover. How big Mitch missed out on that one confused a few but when Dicko polled only 1 vote, yes one vote, in the Grogan Medal we understood something of the fickleness involved. Our other Dick, the big 'H' couldn't crack a mention. Go figure.
Goalkickers (with Carey Fulton copping a mention) and representative age level winners paraded on the stage prior to the Rising Star award. Darin Stewart (Round 4), Dayne Zorko (Round 9) and Jesse Derrick (Round 16) were our nominees with Tinker on 22 votes running third behind Bail from Mt Gravatt (66 votes) and Beames (53 votes) from Southport.
The Grogan Medal count was interesting from a comparison point of view with the Syd Guilford trophy and the AFLQ team of the year selection. After 7 rounds Tinker was third with 7 votes behind Payne and Kinch from Southport and Morningside respectively. He held that position to the 14th round with 15 votes and trailing Bail and Payne on 16 and Kinch on 17. Fortunately all players were legible (the MC noted that reported players were illegible for the award) and Kinch drew away in the final rounds to win with 25 votes from Payne and Wise both on 22 and both from Southport, followed by Bail from Mt Gravatt on 19 and Tinker rounding out the top five with 17 votes - maybe a chat or two with umpires kept him from higher accolades? Tinker's 17 votes were gathered in 8 of the 19 rounds. Dean Howard was our next best with 8 votes from 4 games followed by a plethora of players on 4, 3, 2, or 1 including Scott Beattie, Mitch Andrews and Dane Eaton on 4. Players to take away BOG votes were Tinker, Dean Howard, Ben Walters, Mitch Andrews, Taylor Rolfe and the Scott Beattie. Fair dinkum it is truly amazing how umpires and independent observers see it and no doubt Shaun Hart will have his own take on our B&F next month.

Richard Griffith concluded the evening confirming the expansion to 10 teams for 2009 to include the Western Magpies and the NT. Apart from the excitement factor the social responsibility that aussie rules assumes was highlighted with the acceptance of including the NT team. There will be 6 games in Darwin, 3 in Alice Springs and 2 away games in Cairns and Townsville with the ABC and/or NITV likely to televise the final series and home and away games on a hopefully regular basis. Richard also announced that the GC17 (code for S'port?) license would be announced 13 October.
