A hot day at RAMS Arena saw Calder Cannons and the Western Jets face off in the first round under the new NAB League banner.
The Jets started off with positive signs early matching Calder's intensity at the ball from the opening bounce. Elizabeth Georgostathis was continuing her fine form from last year by digging into the hard contest and winning the clearances. Nikita Wright was solid down back, her defensive efforts second to none while Isabelle Grant slotted Western's first goal of the game. The Jets went into the second quarter with 1 point lead but Calder struck back.
The girls seemed to drop off the tempo and the Cannons took full advantage for two quarters. With the Jets going into their shells, Calder lead by 23 points to close the third term. In the final quarter, the game was out of reach, but the Jets kept Calder goalless in the final term to stop the bleeding. The Cannons walked away 27 point victors but the Jets had some small victories that they can work with in the future.
Despite the loss, coach Zachary Reid was upbeat and looking forward to next week as the team settles together. Next week the Western Jets will face the Murry Bushrangers in what should be a tough test for the Jets. If they succeed it could set the foundation for a good season.
Hero Of The Day
Nikita Wright: Wright set the tone for the Western Jets early. From her defensive end, she chased down opposition players holding the ball in the first term. Wight's kicking was very efficient, even with immense pressure from Calder, she kept her cool in the chaos.
