EAST BURWOOD – MATCH REPORT Rd18
By Peter Booth
Firstly, congratulations to all the coaches and support staff of all 3 teams participating in qualifying finals at Bayswater this Saturday.
SENIORS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 27-16-178 def EAST BURWOOD 9-11-65
In came Frankish and Papillo and back to the reserves went Davis and Johnson. It was a perfect day for football against our best traditional rival East Burwood. Denis Pagan entertained the luncheon crowd with a very informative speech. All eyes were on Matt Greig and Pat Bowden in their goalkicking battle. Greig began the day 3 in front and finished with 8 and tallied 110 while Bowden finished on 105. Well done again Greiggy. Froud kicked first goal via Morse then Ross answered via Webster. Davidson had the job on Crozier, Waller had Cook and McCarthy took Yze. Bardon was on fire early and passed to Webster who goaled. Greig kicked his first before the siren. Rushton was as busy as a bee running off half back. At ¼ time we led by 2 goals 4-3 to 2-3.
The Eagles had a huge third quarter kicking 11-5 to 1 goal. Froud kicked the first two one of them after 2 great efforts by Greig. Millhouse then kicked the next 3 via Davidson and Bardon. Bardon kicked a checkside helicopter goal via Mendes. Unfortunately Mullett went off and did not return. Greig kicked the next 2 goals via Bardon and Nummy. Late in the term Morse goaled via Holmes then Froud kicked another 2 with the first being delivered by Bardon. Bardon’s right boot was on fire with 21 possessions in the first half. Better players for the half were – Bardon, Rushton, Morse, McCarthy, Webster, Ross, Millhouse and O’Grady. At half time we led 15-8 to 3-3.
In a slightly subdued third quarter we added 5-3 to 3-5. Greig began with 2 more goals with the first via Webster and Froud then the second via Bardon. Froud was having a wonderful match kicking long, marking well and showing blistering speed. While all this was going on it was good to see Davidson playing his best game of the year at centre half back. Froud kicked a long goal then Morse goaled via Froud and Millhouse. Greig kicked the last goal of the term via Morse. At ¾ time we led 20-11 to 6-8.
We kicked 7-3 to 3-3 in the last quarter. Webster kicked the first of the last term then Millhouse goaled via Ross. Ross had a good game in the ruck and Hall imposed his strength on the game. Froud capped off a wonderful game with goals 7 and 8. When Greig kicked his 7th via Rushton we all felt the goalkicking title was his. Webster who also played his best 4 quarter game goaled via Morse then Greig put the icing on the cake with his 8th via Millhouse. The Eagles home by 113 points. Better players for the half were - Bardon, Froud, Davidson, Morse, Ross, Nummy, Rushton, Greig and McCarthy.
Goalkickers – Greig 8, Froud 8, Millhouse 4, Webster 3, Morse 2 and singles to Ross and Bardon.
Best Players – Bardon, Froud, Morse, Rushton, McCarthy, Greig, Webster, Davidson. Millhouse and Nummy with apologies to 3 or 4 other players.

RESERVES FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 14-11-95 def EAST BURWOOD 7-8-50
A big game in the reserves to retain the double chance. Our win saw the Rams tumble from top spot for the first time this year to be replaced by Blackburn. As I was hosting the luncheon these notes were passed on to me by John McCarthy. A fairly even first quarter with goals coming from Dressing and Johnson. At 1/.4 time the Rams led 3-2 to 2-1. In the second term goals came from Smith then Whitchell made a magnificent spoil for another Smith goal. The other goal was kicked by Gaul. Better players for the half were – Illott, Whitchell, Emley, Johnson, Davis and Dressing. At half time we led by 5 points 5-5 to 4-6.
We kicked 5 goals in the 3rd quarter to rip the game apart. Stewart goaled via Davis then Ford and Chandler goaled. Smith kicked another two.
In the last term goals came from Ford, Chandler, Davis and Conroy as we powered home to win by 45 points. Better players for the half were – Johnson, Davis, Whitchell and Emley.
Goalkickers – Smith 4, Chandler 2, Ford 2 and singles to Dressing, Johnson, Gaul, Davis and Conroy.
Coach’s Best Plaeyers – McLure, Johnson, Davis, Illott, Bird, Smith and Whitchell.
Coach’s Comments – Well done, absolutely fantastic. We should be enthused and confident about meeting them again next week. It was gut running by everyone.
COLTS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 33-17-215 def EAST BURWOOD 1-3-9
A game totally dominated by the Eagles as the scoreline suggests. We kicked 6-5 to 1 behind in the first quarter. Our goals came from Rogneda with 2 and singles to McInerney, McDonald, Murphy, Cameron and Close. McInerney delivered passes that resulted in 3 of those goals.
We kicked 7-5 to nil in the second quarter. Cameron, Ryan and Johnson each kicked 2 goals with Setyana the other. I made a note that our blocking and 1% were terrific. We kicked the first 3 goals of the quarter in the first 3 minutes. Better players for the half were – McInerney, Rogneda, McDonald, Cameron, Huisman and Henderson. At half time we led 13-10 to 0-1.
It was 9-6 to 2 behinds in the third quarter. Rogneda had a wonderful quarter but he had plenty of mates. Rogneda kicked 5 goals and Cameron kicked another 2. Other goals came from Dore and Humphrey. Besides kicking goals themselves Rogneda and Cameron also became feeders along with Ryan. Although it wasn’t a game for the defenders Bull, Parker and Close were terrific in defence. Henderson played his usual good honest game. At ¾ time we led 22-16 to 0-3.
We certainly had our kicking boots on in the last quarter adding 11-1 to 1 goal. Quon took the mark of the day in defence. Rogneda who was unstoppable kicked another 3. Cameron, Dore and Murphy added 2 goals each with singles coming from Murphy and Setyana. THE BIG HIGHLIGHT OF THE QUARTER/MATCH/YEAR WAS KIERAN TAIG KICKING HIS FIRST GOAL IN 2 SEASONS WITH THE COLTS. Players ran from everywhere to congratulate him. Well done to Greg Macdonald for giving him the opportunity. Better players for the half were – Rogneda, Setyana, McDonald, McInerney, Close, Carrados, Dore, Henderson and Humphrey.
Goalkickers – Rogneda 8, Cameron 7, Murphy 3, Dore 3, Ryan, McInerney, Setyana and Johnson 2 each with singles to Taig, McDonald, Humphrey and Close.
Coach’s Best Players – Close, Rogneda, Setyana, McDonald and Cameron with special mentions to Geraghty and McInerney.
Coach’s Comments – A good way to finish the home & away season. We had 20 good performers today. We need to get forward hard and fast. Our ball switches and play ons were the best for the year. NOW THE REAL FOOTY STARTS.
