2019 BLADES SEASON INFORMATION

Message from Blades:

Thank you to all our new and past volunteers and players who helped get us through a second season since we almost folded in 2017.

We are the oldest junior club on the Gold Coast and it is exciting to see the rebuilding continuing particularly with our new U9 and U11 teams.

This season we went back to Wednesday afternoon/evening training at the Doyle Centre, Marymount College again fielding 4 teams making 2 finals (and a further 3 finals in Summer Comp). This year we got a win with Our U21 Div 1 team taking gold (with no coach or manager).

In Summer Comp our Blades Thunder and Blades Bombers topped the ladder with Blades Thunder taking the Gold.

With Troy and Leyhon’s patience finally paying off we got an U15 team up and running for Summer Comp and ended up with 3 x U17 teams as well. We had our first girls join the club and although Abbie had to play with the Boys team we will continue to build in this area. We also have 4 current or past Blades players representing Gold Coast in the U21 Div 1 team. Congrats to all involved.

It was great to welcome our new Coaches John, Cheyne and Pete (with some more volunteers in the wings) who have been instrumental in getting more players to the club and preparing their teams for the upcoming Winter Comp.

A big thank you to Coach Mark for organizing the Winter Comp medals and trophies and past Marymount Student and current QBL Roller’s player Christian Salecich for volunteering as our Guest Speaker on the night. Thanks also to Treasurer Peter who organized the Pizzas and the gifts and a huge thank you to Debbie who saved my bacon by taking on the Uniform Co-ordinator role. As usual we would like to thank the staff at Gold Coast Basketball (particularly Jennelle and Joel) and all the other club delegates who have been so supportive.

A few fabulous contributors have moved on from the Club. Matt and Lachlan played their last season in U20’s and we wish them well (Matt is still playing Rep). The Nicholson Family (May, Fred and Thomas) have also moved on and they will be missed after many years of service to the Club.

Below is the general information from Gold Coast Basketball and at the bottom is Blades specific information for the 2018 season.

Overview of Gold Coast Basketball Junior Basketball League (GCJBL)

The Gold Coast Junior Basketball league is the Premier Gold Coast Junior Basketball Competition (also known as Club or Winter Comp).

The League consists of ten clubs, TSS Suns (Southport), Celtics (Carrara), Heat (Reedy Creek), Blades (Burleigh), PBC Magpies (Palm Beach), Varsity Vipers (Varsity Lakes), Somerset Spartans (Mudgeeraba) Tweed Slammers (Southern Gold Coast/Northern NSW) and Panthers (Northern GC) and new for 2019 the Northern Nets!

Competitions are run for both boys and girls in the U9,11,13,15,17 and 20 age groups.

The purpose of the GCJBL is to provide a competition pathway for junior basketball players on the Gold Coast.

The 2019 Gold Coast Junior Basketball League runs from February 20th through to 7 Sep (Winter season) and from the 9th of October through to the 7th of December (Summer League). Currently Registration is only open for the Winter Season (Registration fees will cover the Pre-Season and Winter Season).

Blades Basketball will begin taking registrations now with trials taking place in February. As usual we will give preference to current Blades players but there could be limited spots so I would suggest you register early or you could miss a spot.

Please note, we are not currently offering all age groups but would welcome more volunteer coaches to be able to offer them for your child.

The GCJBL will be predominantly played at both Carrara Indoor sports Complex Tallebudgera Recreation Centre on Friday nights, Somerset on Wednesdays and Thursdays, then at Carrara Indoor Sports Complex on Saturday mornings. However, as the City Council are closing the courts for the month of May there is a shortage of courts so the season will start a week earlier than normal and there will be a reduced number of grading games.
