On the 17th of August 10 Mac Uni U/18’s gathered at Sydney airport along with Bully and Donnie for our combined trip with Balmain and Manly to Perth. We were all very excited at the chance to go interstate and play Doncaster Heights from Vic and Burnie from Tassie. Luck would have it that upon arrival in Perth we all got on the wrong bus and ended up at the wrong campsite and had to drive for another half hour to get to our beds for the first night.
With breakfast being at the ridiculous time of 7am, many of the boys decided to skip the first meal and grab some more sleep. As it was raining all morning we cancelled training and headed into Freo markets for the day where we were mistaken for Freo players by some Asian tourists. They took our photos and seemed very happy. Once we were finished with our fun at the markets we made our way back to the Fremantle Headquarters for a gym and pool session as well as a useful session on leadership. Later in the night the real fun began as we toured the decommissioned Fremantle jail visiting the children’s ward, solitary confinement and the gallows. It was probably the closest all the team mates got for the entire trip with our Captain “Trembles” (Dylan) going foetal on the bus trip home, Hobo throwing many expletives out at a booby trap guard and Dunc copping a serve for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ultimately we were all drawn in to the tour and all got scared.
Not all of us slept very well that Friday night but again we had to be up bright and early for breakfast. Saturday saw us have our first joined training session at Docker HQ and after overcoming some difficulties with names and how each other side played we began to string together some quality full field work. After this we went out to East Fremantle to watch the WAFL match between East Freo and Swan Districts. The standard here was very good and all the boys could learn from the tough nature of the WAFL. Again it was the evenings in Freo that proved the highlight as the Macquarie and Manly boys spent plenty of money at Timezone and watched Mobbsy try work his magic with the Freo ladies but for no success.
Sunday morning greeted us with the news that we wouldn’t be playing on Subiaco oval because the rugby tore up the turf the night before. Ossie had other ideas telling us that it was because the other two teams composed mainly of 15 and 16 year olds were too scared to play us on the giant oval. After breakfast we headed off to South Freo oval in dewy conditions. With Super coaches Bully and Donnie we were ready to play from the first bounce against Doncaster. We started slowly but gradually gelled as a team to dominate the first game 7.7.49 to 0. Highlights included Hobo destroying his fist on the back of some poor kids head, he had to be helped from the ground. Our second game was against the boys from Tassie and it was a much more physical affair. We still ran out winners 8.5.53 to 2.3.15 against the previously undefeated Burnie. After the game we went to Subiaco to watch Freo vs. Melbourne. Dunc copped a heavy serve after the game being one of only two Melbourne supporters on the trip.
Monday morning rolled around and most of us were in no hurry to get up at 7 for breakfast. After packing we departed for the markets one last time and grabbed some lunch then went to the airport. The flight home was relatively uneventful except for the boys ‘ooohing’ and ‘aaahhing’ at the fights on UFC. We were finally home again after a great weekend and would like to thank all involved in the organising of the weekend and
MUAFC for this great opportunity.
