A great day for football at Merrimac Oval which was in pristine condition thanks to curators Mick Williams and Bob Walters. Depending on how results go we could be hosting prelims and possibly a GF over the next couple of weeks and the work of Mick and Bob will result in $$$$ for the club.
Magoos report not available until Spackers finds the time.
Seniors
The seniors took the field with Hutchy and Webby making their debuts - at last Webby was able to strip at the same time as Mitch Andrews. It was a good game to watch and while it appeared that the tigers made poor decisions resulting in lots of turnovers, the Cats pressure contributed significantly in producing the loose ball and in the few contested possessions. One astute supporter was effusive in praise for the coach whose stated aims at the start of the season - relentless tackling and to effect a run and carry the ball style of play - appeared to have been successful. One other not so astute supporter was confused over cat players, numbers 34 and 43. Bad sight and dyslexia had him confused over Hamish Dick and Ryan Denne even though they played in different games. Still, they might make a an interesting looking syncronised swimming pair.
Hutchy started well up front getting plenty of touches while Sammy Edwards was at his tackling best down back. Big Mitch, trying to impress Webby, was active across the half forward line taking a couple of strong marks with Matty 'white line fever' Spencer finishing off one such mark with a major. Despite good work from Jacko the tigers scored from a stoppage in front of goal to go one up. Tinker evened things up with the first of five for the day. Plenty of points scored from deliberate shots inside our 50 and at times we looked like the Opals with 11 handballs in a circular direction. The ball was moving quickly with Emblem, Stewart and Dick covering more ground than a marathoner. Stewart received a 50 m penalty, handballed off to Tinker who passed to Mitch Andrews who appeared to be moving more freely than in past weeks. Unfortunately he hit the timber with his shot. It was entertaining footy and Darin Stewart was providing a focal point up front eventually scoring on the run. He doesn't like to stop and line them up. We went to the first break one goal down 3 5 to 4 5. That was to be the tigers only glory for the next two stanzas.
We started the second well and didn't look back. Beattie, Tinker, Smith and Dick combined to kick a fantastic goal - clever Dick anticipated ball position three times over 60m to create it. Dienjes was everywhere. He would pop up down back with a bone crashing tackle, run the ball through the lines on the outer side, and present up front. He was hunting in packs and picking up kicks at will. Dillion was running with Zorko and the tigers went defensive with Knobel floating down back. But the catters continued to attack the ball with Pat Evans displaying clever hands on two occasions and creating plays with good vision and short passing on others. Hutchy was showing maturity with one percenters in his tackling and shepherding and was assisting our goal kickers. JD was strong and like a train off the back line providing plenty of opportunities for us. Dienjes notched his third and we looked like we might just wrap it up by half time. Unfortunately a couple of indiscretions were picked up by the adjudicator and we finished up with a 5 to nil goal quarter. Tinker looked to have an animated discussion with the adjudicators walking off at half time - no doubt about the Olympics and the beauty of female gymnastic floor routines. Broadie 8 9 to Labrador 4 9
The Catters jumped out early in what was to be another 5 goal quarter balanced by 7 behinds. We continued to attack the ball with gusto. The 'H', JD, Skrina and Spence kept up a furious pace and non-plussed theor opponents. One play resembled a basketball strategy with the ball played around the 50m line and finished by Tinker with a 'three pointer' from the tennis court pocket. Smithy was fired up trying to impress the Lions and maintain his place on their list. Scotty Beatie who eats opponents for morning snacks was indefatigible in the engine room but on some occasions doing a little too much forcing the adjudicator to to give the ball to the opposition. The blood rule was applied on Matty Spencer who ran off exchanging pleasantries with Matt Dillion. Spence continued to fill in Coach Hart on the incident from the boundary line - unfortunately Shaun did not understand some of Matty's vocabulary. Beattie, JD and Skrina were in everything. Skrina appeared mismatched but he continually collected possessions and ran or passed the ball from the back line. Young Rolefy was playing with vigor and starred with a 80m run and carry to land on his rear end but handballed it off to 'H' for a sausage roll. Jacko was working well down back and forcing the cherry to the ground, Dicko was backing him up while Cloughy, Spencer and Sam Edwards kicked inaccurately. A late goal to the tigers was their only major for the quarter. At the last change Broadie 13 16 to Labrador 5 10. Ten goals to one over two quarters.
We were clearly heading the medal table for the day and the players' minds maybe floated to post game celebrations. Whatever, we allowed the tigers to outscore us. While inside 50 stats were a lot to us and not many to them, they were able to pressure our shots on goal and produce 3 big ones themselves.'H' was showing classy foot skills to allow Tinker to score after a memorable play. Pat Evans was now wearing Dillion to a point of frustration and he may have brought the game into disrepute by donning a disguise wig to keep Pat off his track. We finished off with a training track goal around the outer. Final score Broadbeach 15 20 110 defeated Labrador 8 12 60
Goals: Zorko 5, Dienjes 3, Tippett 2, Dick 2 and Stewart, Spencer and Derrick 1 each
Best: Emblem, Beattie, Dick, Skrinner, Derrick, Lyons
The future looks good at Broady: a good coach, a nucleus of skilled experience, a lot of good youngsters coming up through the under age teams, an excellent crop of U/18s and a bunch of U/18s with a few senior games under their belt. Hopefully we can retain them all but expect GC17 to strike soon.
