Last home games for the year started off with a whole lot of contrasting themes. Bloodsâ favourite Lappa lay waiting for the ambo in the changing rooms with a facial injury while inside the clubrooms tomato sauce, cocktail frankfurts and chips were on display for the annual kidsâ luncheon. The Magoos were playing a team still fighting for the finals while the OC firsts were playing for bragging rights on Mad Monday.
Finally the face painting fairy arrived and the match commenced. The Bloods were out of the block early and indicators pointed it being Hammer time. Vossy was on song and Chis was already starting to ingratiate himself to the opposition players and supporters. Lance looking dangerous grabbed a handball and slammed in our first then Benny (who was also later to cop the wraith of the OC supporters) took the ball from Al Johnson and helped himself to his first. Jonno was playing well and his sprint down the Peter Mason flank saw an inside out ball being marked by Lance for another. Minutes later Lance got his third and his opening quarter had Mageeesque proportions awaiting but the bell sounded for a 4.2 to 0.3 score line. Frogg was being Frog and Paddy was rucking well.
Former Hawk Tallis goaled in the first minute of the 2nd quarter before a running Hammer got the ball to Harro, who marked and kicked truly. Big Stewie came on and Critta took another mark and goal. Players were combining well and Morro, roving the ball off the pack, got another. The ball soon went to the fast flowing Jonno and he scored another. Benny marked strongly and truly converted leading to a half time score line of 9.5 to 1.4.
During the year the Oracle has had concerns about the half time break and what happens to the Bloods upon their return. The suggestion was made we should have run across the road to the 7/11 for a slurpy and that may have been sound advice as the OC bounded out the blocks like an underage Chinese gymnast. In what seems only 90 seconds they banged on 3 easy goals and hardly a ball was touched by the Bloods. Mase looking dangerous came from nowhere to score a point and the OC banged on another 2 majors before Benny got the ball and scored our first for the quarter. Morro, Hammer and Chis were busting a gut but the oppo wouldnât go away. Chisâs hard work paid off and he scored after being left unguarded and a fine goal on the run resulted. Mase ran off his opponent and scored a beauty from the playground pocket and while our 3 gaols stemmed the flow the OC had banged on 7 for the quarter.
An unimpressed Shannas read the riot act to the players at the final break and said several adjectives that would have not fitted in during the kidsâ luncheon.
The last quarter was good footy and the OC failed to go away... Chis and Hammer were still hard at it and Frog, Sammy and Vossy were everywhere. Chis took and nice little earner in the square to convert and Al kicked a beauty from the boundary. He followed up with one around the corner and when JJ Magee got his first the final siren went seeing the Bloods victorious by 31 points. Good effort form the OC, who could have been forgiven in having their beer goggles on after half time. They finished 7th for 2008, there highest level ever.
The Throng descended into the rooms for the coldest cans in the south. The Oracle noted that Fluff and few of the Magoos had lost the power of speech over the past 3 hours after visiting another establishment that was definitely not the 7/11.
So boys and girls the home and away seasons finishes with the Bloods on 12 wins and as Shandy often said during the year, âit sure beats 2 winsâ. With possibility the face painting fairy coming into the team next week we journey to EP to take on Marcellin. Boy do we owe them one â and guess what? Finals footy is a very different game
