The AFL Ontario 2018 schedule included a floating match between the Toronto Dingos and the Toronto Rebels, and so it was that the two teams found themselves facing off on Wednesday August 1st. Both teams entered this clash coming off losses and with things nearing the pointy end of the season plenty to play for.
The Dingos found themselves again struggling to hit the ground running, with the first quarter proving a bloodbath and the Rebels putting on six majors. The Dingos did eventually manage to stabilize and put through a major of their own but left themselves with a big hole to climb out of if they were to compete.
Veteran ruckman Tom Bell was available for this clash providing some much needed stability in the middle of the contest. He was well supported by Steven Donnelly. Despite their efforts however the Rebels added another three majors for the second quarter, while the Dingos could only muster one of their own in response.
The Dingos were left with plenty to talk about at half time, down 9.8-62 to 2.1-13, realizing that from here it would be a tall order to get back into it. The half back and back lines had plenty to do throughout this one, with Greg Gilbert being the standout. Without his efforts things could have been even more dire, as the 19 behinds the Rebels ultimately recorded surely attest to. Stef Cosma while nominally in the half forward line also had an impact across the ground throughout the match and was ultimately best on ground.
Despite their efforts however the Rebels ultimately amassed another 6 goals over the final two quarters. While the Dingos ultimately added another major as well they must surely focus on their resolve to be ready at the first ball up. The two teams will face off again in the first Tim Shaw Memorial game, to be played on Saturday August 25th at Humber College South.
GOALS: J. Bell, S. Donnelly, R. McNaughton
BEST: S. Cosma, S. Gordon, S. Donnelly, G. Gilbert, T. Bell
