Reserves - Broadbeach v V Force
The Cats met V Force on Saturday at Cooke
Murphy with both teams seriously undermanned. The day saw the senior football debuts for Eddy Grayson, Nathan Cooke, Nick Gordon and Rhys Bergervoet elevated from the
under 18s to help fill the void.
Unfortunately the game started out a scrappy affair and never really improved. Throughout the first quarter the Cats threatened to break away early only to turn the ball over in the forward line. A terrific centre break from Tippo saw him take two bounces before shooting from 40 out for the first Cats goal. The V Force got their second after a stupid free kick awarded in the ruck. Apparently it is now against the rules to jump in the ruck???? Some solid defence from Eddy and Bergs across half back caused a turnover that eventually lead to young Cookey snapping a goal after the crumbing the ball nicely. Trav Johnson was working hard across the forward line without much reward and Aaron Rolfe and Dan rawley were both seeing plenty of the ball. At quarter time Cats 3-1/19 to V Force 2-1/13.
That is really where the high points finished.
The game became a real mistake fest with only the Cats inaccuracy keeping V Force in touch . Michael Cooke, Spud and Rolfey were again
seeing plenty of the ball but each were guilty of not using it very well. At half time Cats 5-8/38 to V Force 5-2/32.
More of the same in the third. Eddy, Nick and Bergs were showing some great endeavour and all looked at home in the twos. Webby, Tippo and Ben Picket were working into the game and probably kept us ahead of the V Force. At The last break Cats 6-13/49 to V Force 6-2/38.
Fulltime could not come quick enough at this stage.
A couple of serious injuries to the V Force and the overall scrappy play had taken its toll.
A couple of highlights midway through the last term with Bergs creating a turnover with some good defence for Spud to kick a goal.
Nick worked hard on the wing and made three tackles in a row again forcing a turnover only to be penalised for the last tackle.
Another goal to Tippo after a strong lead was enough to seal the game.
In the end the Cats 9-21/75 to V Force
9-3/57.
Goal scorers were Tippo – 4, Spud – 2, N Cooke, M Cooke and J Frawley – 1 each..
Best players were Spud, Webby, Rolfey,
Tippo, Benny P and Bergs.
Seniors - Broadbeach v Lions
A big assignment for the Cats on Saturday when they took on the in form Lions at the Gabba. With the Lions recording big wins against Zillmere and Mt Gravatt recently we knew we had to turn up with our A game to compete.
The first quarter started like the last few meetings between the teams, very tight.
Onlyin accuracy in front of goal by the Cats gave the Lions an 11 point quarter time lead.
Wade Dickson and Mitch Andrews were working very hard for the visitors whilst Jessie Derrick was showing plenty of run.
At quarter time
Lions 3-4/22 to Cats 1-5/11.
Unfortunately that was it for the day from the Cats. The next three quarters saw the Lions run away with the game. Broadbeach never topped trying but the class of the Lions senior players in Selwood and Corrie was almost unstoppable. At half time the score had blown out to 10-8/68 to 1-7/13, Three quarter time it was 17-13/115 to 3-9/27 and at fulltime 25-20/170 to Cats 4-9/33.
The biggest difference between this Lions outfit and the last time the two teams met was their intense tackling and harassing pressure.
At no time in the game did the Cats look to have any time to dispose of the ball and thus turnovers were created.
When rebounding
the Lions were crisp.Although overshadowed completely Broadbeach
had several players that gave it their all.
Goal scorers were Tinker – 2, Jacko and Hamish – 1 each..
Best players were Dicko, Mitch, Jesse, Jacko,
Skrin and Tinker.
18s - Broadbeach v Mt Gravvat
A good crowd was on hand Sunday to watch the minor premiers take on arch rivals Mr Gravatt in the 18s major semi final.
Mt Gravatt won the corresponding final last
year against Broadie to virtually end the year for the Cats. The first quarter started at a break neck pace with the ball sweeping from one end to the other.
Both teams pegged a couple of goals and at quarter time only a few points split the two.
Liam Frawley and Josh Searl were controlling the back line beautifully, Hutchy was giving first use of the ball in the ruck and Shorty was looking
dangerous up forward. The second quarter was a solid one for the Cats breaking away with the help of a strong breeze. Joe Barille, Trav Fraser, Tyler Green lifted their intensity in the term and the forwards capitalised from some pinpoint delivery. Only a couple of late goals kept Mt Gravatt in touch at the long break. Broadbeach three goals up with a half to go.
The third quarter started with Mt Gravatt piling on the pressure.
When they got the first two goals things looked a bit ominous for the Cats who appeared to stop working.
Joe Barille and Josh Searl reversed this trend with both players getting plenty of the ball.
Shorty again started to look dangerous as we worked ourselves back into the game.
Goal for goal for the balance of the quarter saw a small break for the
Cats at the last break.
The final quarter saw Mt Gravatt throw everything at the young Cats. Joey, Searly, Liam all continued their good form and Fitzy got his hands on the ball for some important touches across half back in a frenetic last term. Each Mt Gravatt goal was answered by a Cats major with the team eventually winning 13-5/83 to 10-6/66.
After the game coach Smithy admitted the effort was not the teams best but he praised his young charges for hanging tough.
The win puts the
Cats straight into the grand final in two weeks time at Cooparoo.
Smithy has asked for as many Broadbeach supporters to make their way to the game to offset any crowd advantage a Brisbane team may have. Keep an eye on the website for game details.
A special mention to Josh Searl who backed up after playing senior against the Lions on Saturday evening and played an integral part in the win.
Also to Nathan
Lyons and Jackson Emblem who backed up to act as runners for the 18s.
