The week began on Tuesday night where training was moved to St Patrick’s College for the week with AUSTAR Arena being rested to keep it reasonable condition for the match on Sunday against the Western Jets. Training was full on for the week and we concentrated on our voice and intensity on the training track. We were expecting a tough Western Jet’s side to come to AUSTAR and it wasn’t going to be an easy game to win.
Our warm up and our preparation we great and we were switched on and ready to take on the Jets in muddy conditions. We showed in the 1st quarter that we had come here to play with early goals in the first couple of minutes, “Roo” McKenzie was on fire and racking up the possessions early, went into the first break a couple of goals up.
After the first break our boys didn’t give in and kept piling on goals, with the first goal by Ned Gilbert who was leading from the front and late in the quarter we slotted another 2 goals. Going into the main break we lead by couple of goals.
Jets tested us early in the 3rd quarter kicking 3 unanswered goals, but the boys didn’t panic and kept on fighting hard and we kicked the next 3 goals ourselves. The Jets kept fighting and were only a point down at 3 qtr time.
It took gut busting running, team plays and being accountable and to keep score board pressure on the Jets to come away with the win. Leading from the front were the big man Roughead and Gilbert. Ruffy was outstanding for the whole day but ended up getting a heavy knock in the last couple of minutes and had to go off. Hip Hop naitanui was eager to get on and may have just gone on a bit early. Cranage finished the day with 3 goals. Great team effort to win by 9 points. Congratulations to “Boo” Radley on his 1st game for the season. Boo chipped in with 2 goals.
Overall it was a great team effort with 22 contributors on the and playing in difficult conditions, it was a great win by the boys and now must keep focused for next week against a strong top 3 side in Geelong.
Thanks to all the parents who supplied our after match food and to the ladies who put on the teas on Thursday nights for all player staff and parents.
