LILYDALE – MATCH REPORT
By Peter Booth
SENIORS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 18-17-125 def LILYDALE 8-13-61
A cold day with a few light showers with the ground better than I thought because of new drainage. Back in were Cullen, Rushton and Hall and out were Griffiths and Emley to the reserves and Cassidy out for the year and perhaps beyond. Frankish came back from injury through the reserves. Michael Dell’Aquilla played one of his rare games in the reserves and kicked 8 goals. Lost in Greig’s 102 goals was Ash Froud who kicked 4 and now has 52. It seems highly probable Blackburn and East Ringwood will finish in positions 4 and 5. This means we will then meet Noble Park in the Qualifying final in week one of the finals.
In the seniors Greig got his century of goals in the first minute of the game and for the punters it was the 11th time in 17 games this year that he has kicked the first one. It then took 10 minutes before Lilydale kicked the next goal. Towards the end of the quarter Froud goaled via Bardon then Talevski goaled via Ross. Talevski then kicked his second via Bardon. Rushton and O’Grady were good down back early. At ¼ time we led 4-3 to 1-6.
In the second term we added 5-6 to 2-2. Davidson, who was to play his best game this year snapped the first goal of the quarter. Millhouse goaled then came a period in the game that was pretty ordinary, similar to the 10 minute patch in the first quarter. Greig snapped his second then Millhouse kicked another via Bardon. Talevski kicked his 3rd via Bardon. Bardon was the deliverer in 5 of our first 9 goals. Better players for the half were – Rushton, Mullett, Bardon, Talevski, Morse, Davidson, McCarthy and Holmes. At half time we led 9-9 to 3-8.
After the break Greig gave the crowd their monies worth with a screamer in the goal square beating 3 Lilydale defenders. Millhouse snapped his third. Froud brought up his 50th goal after a wonderful piece of ruck work by Hall. Ross also was having a wonderful quarter. Mullett kept racking up the possessions around the ground. At ¾ time we led 12-14 to 5-11.
In the final term we kicked 6-3 to 3-2. Lilydale kicked the first 2 goals then Greig limped off, lets hope he’s ok for next week with Patrick Bowden on 99 goals. McCarthy was grand in defence especially with Rushton, they marshalled the troops down back. A procession of goals followed firstly from Ross then Froud kicked 2 with one of them via Bardon. Mullett capped off a terrific game with a goal then immediately assisted Talevski to goal. Mullett, with seconds to go passed to Millhouse on the siren who goaled from outside fifty with the heavy ball. Vermont winners by 64 points.
Better players for the half were Mullett, McCarthy, Ross, Froud, Mendes, Davidson and Hall.
Goalkickers – Mollhouse 4, Froud 4, Talevski 4, Greig 3 and singles to Davidson, Mullett and Ross.

Coach’s Comments – A good effort boys – good to get the points.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 18-10-118 def LILYDALE 10-4-64
Not much to report on the first quarter with only 1 goal scored, it was pretty lack lustre. At the break Lilydale led 1-2 to 0-5.
The second term opened with Dell’Aquilla booting 2 goals in 3 minutes to breathe some life into the game. Rosewarne goaled then Gaul snapped a beauty. Lilydale kicked a late goal. Better players for the half were Emley, Bordin, Gaul and Baylis. At half time we led 4-8 to 2-2.
We got a real fright after the break with Lilydale kicking 5 of the next 6 goals to take the lead. Our goals came from Della’Quilla who kicked 2, Emley then Gaul goaled on the siren to wrest the lead back. Emley and Bordin both had outstanding quarters. At ¾ time we led 8-9 to 8-4.
After the fright it was party time in the last term as we added 10-1 to 2 goals. Stewart kicked the first then Ford quickly followed. Stewart then took the mark of the day in the reserves. Dell’Aquilla then kicked the next 4 goals and then singles came from Frankish, Rosewarne, Emley and Chandler. Better players for the half were – Dell’Aquilla, Emley, Bordin, Stewart, Bird, Whitchell and Dressing. After an earlt struggle Vermont home by 54 points.
Goalkickers – Dell’Aquilla 8 and 2 each to Rosewarne, Emley and Gaul with singles to Frankish, Chandler, Ford and Stewart.
Coach’s Best Players – Dell’Aquilla, Whitchell, Bird, Emley, McLure, Gaul and Bordin.
Coach’s Comments – We were focusing on next week and to win by 10 goals was a good lead in.
COLTS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 10-8-68 def LILYDALE 5-7-37
Henderson kicked our first goal and it took 10 minutes to get our next with a Dore snap. Siakavelis, Rogneds and McInerney were good early. At ¼ time we led 2-1 to 1 behind. Lilydale kicked the first 2 goals to lead by a point. It took the Eagles 13 minutes to kick a goal which eventually came from Humphrey. Late in the quarter Siakavelis goaled via Rogneda. When Lilydale goaled before the siren it was still very much game on. Better players for the half were – Siakavelis, McDonald, Rogneda and McInerney. At half time we led 4-1 to 3-1 but not playing the brand of footy that would win a final.
It was a different Vermont after the break as we kicked 4-3 to 0-2 for the term. Rogneda, who was relishing the wet conditions goaled on the run. Romas goaled via Debney and Huisman. Mr versatile, Jones goaled via McInerney then came a wonderful smother by Rogneda. McDonald finished the quarter with a goal as the team started to show some form. At ¾ time we led 8-4 to 3-5.
Rogneda was first to goal after the break via McInerney and when Ryan goaled via Siakavelis the game was well and truly over. Lilydale gained some respectability with 2 late goals. Vermont home by 31 points. Better players for the half were – Rogneda, Henderson, Carrados, Debney, Dore and Huisman.
Goalkickers – Rogneda 2 with singles to Siakavelis, Dore, Henderson, Jones, Ryan, Lomas, McDonald and Humphrey.
Coach’s Best Players – Close, Siakavelis, McDonald, Cameron and Henderson.
Coach’s Comments – It was always going to be a battle in the conditions. Some of our decision making under pressure really worries me. We lifted in the second half and we used the ball better. It wasn’t a pretty game of footy.
