A great weekend for the Yarras with 7 out of 10 teams tasting victory!
This week the C-Res girls took to the court against Springvale District Red determined to keep their position at the top of the table. Starting strong in the first quarter leading Springvale 12-1 at the end of the first, the opposition came back fighting in the second using their accurate shooters and strong defence well the Yarra’s had to fight hard in the third and the fourth to maintain their lead. This week’s best on was shared between mid-court weapon, Mila who put on an absolute clinic down the mid using her speed and agility to run rings around her opponent and bring the ball down the court efficiently. Charly Abbott also walked away with the best on title this week for showing a dramatic improvement in her game and for an amazing defensive display. The Yarra’s took the win 42-23 keeping their spot at the top of the table.
This week the C grade girls took on Mordialloc White. The girls demonstrated a full team effort, with two subs giving us fresh legs over the whole court. The Yarras hit the ground running and were leading at every break throughout the game. The defence end turned over the ball continually and the attack end were able to capitalise on these turn overs. Best on ground this week went to Laura Carroll for her excellent defensive pressure and showing her versatility off by playing 3 different positions. Final score Yarras 36 to Mordialloc 18. Also a shout out to all the netty girls for 3 weeks in a row of all 4 teams winning, Great work ladies!
After such a positive game last week, B Grade were excited to take on Springvale Districts in a much anticipated clash. New combinations saw the girls having to adjust very quickly, and adjust they did. Gelling together like garlic, BBQ and sweet chilli sauce on a HSP, the Yarras were seamless. Greta Stevens controlled the ball down the court, earning her best on for this week! Teamwork and positive vibes ensured the Yarras maintained their lead throughout the game. SY 42 defeated SD 38.
A Grade lined up against a strong Clayton outfit this week. After a tight match with them earlier in the season, the Yarras new they had to come out firing from the very start. Tight defence and pressure all the way down the court saw the Yarras able to capitalise on turnovers to take the lead for the majority of the match. Madeleine Lennox was awarded best on court for her exceptional work in defence which saw her take a number of impressive rebounds and intercepts. The Yarras came away with a solid 17 point win which saw them claim their third consecutive victory.
South Yarra 48 def Clayton 31
This week the Yarras had their first game in Lyndhurst, and after a desperate call for more players, we finally got 13 on the field. Which included the return of Cherie and Camille as well as Ashleigh and Liza for their first game, who were all great assets to the team. The Yarra’s were very competitive for the ball which didn’t show on the scoreboard until Bonnie kicked her first goal for the season, and as well as a great mark from Jess M who then kicked a goal making us win the third quarter, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to take out the win in the end. The final score was 36- 15, and every player should be proud of the effort they put in!
The contrast in conditions compared to last week couldn’t have been starker for the Thirds on Saturday, as they we greeted by a sunny Carrum Downs morning for their match against Skye. After doing well to secure the services of a few more first-time players for the club, they managed to put together a full contingent of 18 to take the field. Despite the lack of a bench, belief was strong within the group, and a strong start only served to reinforce this belief, as the Yarras put the first two goals of the match on the board early. A defensive lapse on the quarter time siren saw the lead cut to 3 points, and some straight kicking from Skye saw them take a 10-point lead into the main break. The third quarter saw Skye’s numbers begin to prove influential, as fatigue began to set in for the Yarras and the score threatened to blow out. Indeed, such a result would have been a formality if not for a determination not seen all year from South Yarra in the final term. Giving 100% right until the final siren, the lions were able to narrowly claim the final term, and left the field with heads held high, despite going down by 30 points
The Reserves faced winless Hallam and the excitement in the Yarras’ change room was like a University student at an open bar. R. Dore was judged Best on Ground for his dominance in the forward line. He was well assisted by the selfless acts of Lay, whom had more goal assists than John Stockton. The spread of goal kickers was like an afternoon tea at the local lawn bowls club, with 11 different goal scorers. Chopper was the only player to record a goal kicked against him. The game was never in doubt as the Reserves won by 105 points.
Some great football from the senior team in recent weeks gave the boys confidence to defeat Hallam again in 2018. It was no easy task with Taz, Nicky P and Rusty making very early exits due to injury and Adsy subjected to a sling tackle on the cricket pitch which saw him play no further part in the game due to concussion. We got to an early lead and held on thanks to Cory's three majors and T-Rog's golden fist. A great effort by all and we look forward to the challenge of Endeavour Hills at Home.
The Supers needed a win to consolidate their place in the top four and were up against second placed home side Dingley who had beaten us by 1 point in the opening round of the season. With the strong wind going straight down the ground, the Yarras held a narrow advantage at half time and kicking with the wind in the third term, the Yarras kicked a couple of goals including a team lifting goal from Borgy however, the Dingoes got one against the wind to claw the margin back to 12 points at the final change. The Yarras were able to bottle up the match for most of the final term and snuck a couple of goals as well and although Dingley also booted two, the boys held on for a hard fought 11 point victory. Better players were Borgy, Clayts, Scotty and Fitzy.
The Masters were outclassed by a skilful Diamond Valley on the large expanses of North Heidelberg ground and went down by 13 goals. The Yarras showed improvement in the second half but the home side handled the windy conditions throughout. Best players were JA, Jimmy, Vinnie and Caff.
