This week the South Yarra Div 9s took on Clayton at The Den. Greatful to be inside with a home court advantage, we came out with high energy. Both sides were pretty even in the first quarter, but after a quarter time pep talk from both coaches (welcome back Bron!), both our defense and attack stepped up their game. Laura Carroll intercepted balls left, right and center this week earning her best on. Shout outs to Steph Hudson for filling in and Brianna Murphy for playing her first game in Yarras colours. South Yarra 57 beat Clayton 32, keeping us at the top of the ladder.
This week C grade took on the 3rd placed Lyndale. It was a tough and physical game from the very start. The Yarras however, kept their cool and played a smart game, almost as smart as Mad Thompson and Alex Wright's decision to word up the bouncer at the Swan to let them leave to pee at another venue and the sneak back in. This week we had a new shooter on the scene with Molly O'Bryan putting on the GA bib and absolutely smashing it. Her great efforts in moving the ball down the court and accuracy when putting a shot up earnt her best on ground. Yarras cool, calm and collected attitude helped them gain the win Yarras 46 to Lyndale 32
This week for division 4, South Yarra went head to head with Hampton Park at the Fritz Holzer Reserve. South Yarra went in to the first quarter strong leading by 27 goals. Best on court went to Sallese Gibson for her hard work in defence. The high scoring game proved to be a breeze for South Yarra winning 68-30.
A Grade matched up with Bentleigh this week. The girls braved less than ideal conditions with steady rain throughout the first half. With a depleted side, they were bolstered by the inclusion of Bronwen Rees and Renae Quilter who slotted into the side seamlessly. In a high scoring match which saw the ball go from one end to the other constantly, Olivia Mercuri provided a passage from defence down to attack all day and her tireless running saw her earn best on court accolades. The game was tight the entire time and eventually saw Yarras come away with a 1 point win! South Yarra 50 def Bentleigh 49
It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon of football - A day of many firsts for the Yarra’s. After a disappointing forfeit the week before, the Yarra’s had a few new recruits to field a full team against the Port Melbourne Colts. The Lionesses came out strong in the first, scoring the first goal of the game and the following two of the quarter. Things didn’t seem to slow down as the Lionesses displayed sheer dominance taking half 61 -1 leaving the Colts goalless. New comers Camille (4.4) and Victoria (1.1) had a great debut game dominating through the midfield and full forward. The relentless game play and team work of the Yarra’s led them to a 116 point win taking Round 8, 126 – 10. Best on ground were Benita contributing 9 goals of the 18 for the day, Tina, Camille, Holly, Lucy and Esther.
The reserves were heavily depleted this week and therefore, saw many new faces. Players, including club captain Scott Stegehuis, came down and up to ensure that 22 players lined up. The team started well and an even first quarter found the Yarras only slightly down. However, they struggled to keep it forward and Hampton scored regularly to run out comfortable 105 point winners in the end. Seb Barr provided great run and defensive pressure whilst, Bryce Denaro managed to get the ball out of the middle time and time again! Final Scores South Yarra 17 to Hampton Park 122
A vastly different Senior side took to the Den to face Hampton Park. HP also had a few different faces and we were confident we could improve on our last meeting. We did but the top team were still too good throughout. They peppered the goals early but were wayward, keeping us in the contest, eventually kicking away. It was a great effort by the boys particularly "the move"; Sauce in to the ruck and Eamon up forward kicking a couple. Adam and Scott were valiant once again with PJ applying great pressure in just his second senior game.
