Bring your wife, girlfriend, mum and grandma down to the Den for Ladies’ Day this Saturday from 3pm.
C Reserve played top of the ladder, BlackRock in their fight for top spot. Having lost to BlackRock before, the Yarras knew that the first quarter was imperative and we had to pull in front early. The Yarras started strong and took the lead. Black Rock played a very strong and physical game putting a lot of pressure on the girls in both defence and attack. This week’s Best on Court, Alex Gandini put on a clinic through the defensive and attacking ends in her role as Wing Defence. We were graced with Emily Grace joining the side who was an absolute gun in defence by creating turnovers. Han and Jules worked tirelessly in the goal circle to capitalise on every opportunity. The Yarras took the big win over Black Rock 47 to 27 placing C Reserve at the top of the table!
C grade took on 4th placed, Clayton. The game started slowly as the rain decided to come and go. Special mention goes to Meg Howlett who took multiple intercepts as Clayton tried to move the ball done the court and Jess Zach for playing while she was under the weather. In the 2nd half we got a glimpse of Laura Carrol back to her best in defensive circle, seriously how good is her reach! This game had more drama than the use of the VAR at the Soccer World Cup and this lead to a very physical 2nd half of the game. The Yarras held up well but unfortunately after a physical fight we went down by just 5 goals. Best on Court was Emily Bacon for a calm and considered approach in the goal circle. Final Score; Clayton 28 to the Yarras 23.
B grade took on third placed, Carrum Paterson Lakes. A good start saw South Yarra taking the lead in the first and second quarters of the game but CPL proved their spot on the ladder by soon taking the lead. The momentum South Yarra had in the beginning dropped which meant a loss with the final score at 49 to 42. Best on Court went to Bethany Griffiths who fought tirelessly to stop the flow down the court.
A Grade took on top four side, Heatherton. A slow start saw the Yarra’s on the back foot the entire match. The Yarras’ Defence worked very hard all day but the accuracy of Heatherton’s Goalers made stopping them scoring very difficult. Sarah Eade was unanimously voted as Best on Court for her tireless work in preventing the flow of play down the court and her outstanding intercepts. South Yarra (34) were defeated by Heatherton (52).
This week the Thirds opened the triple header at Black Rock. A later start meant the team were able to be inspired by the Auskickers out on the ground beforehand. Inspired they were, as all players were on song to jump the Jets with a 7 goal lead at quarter time. An injury to Tim Zeler seemed to stall the momentum and although the Yarras remained on top for the whole game, the Yarras only managed to win by 9 goals. Daniel Borg (T3) was clearly Best on Ground with countless intercept marks, rebound 50's and 3 goals. Final Score Black Rock 2.8.20 were defeated by South Yarra 10.14.74.
After a disappointing loss the week prior against the ladder leaders the Reserves were determined to make amends against a struggling Jets side. The Yarras consulted with sponsor, MD Plan and implemented some structure that was sure to limit the Jets. There were some big hits that showed both sides wanted a hard contest. Costello lived up to his reputation hitting the packs hard. Unfortunately, delivering a hard hit to our Pizza Boy whom came off second best under friendly fire. Lay had the ball on a string and also hit the scoreboard with three separate majors, including stealing one from Smith by marking a would-be goal on the line. Lay’s silky skills gave the crowd a spectacular show. Denaro was the Yarras’ only other goal scorer. He exploded off the pack with the football in his hands, very similar to Christopher Judd, and kicked a great goal from 40 metres out on the flank favouring a left footer. Denaro judged Best on Ground for the Yarras as his selfless acts, structure and action with purpose around stoppages stood out. Bazant’s charge on the football, and run and carry off the backline provided forward movement for the Yarras and set up the Forwards with scoring opportunities. Chopper was like a wingman in rugby. He hit hard with his tackles and tucked the football under his arm always trying to gain positive yardage for every possession. The Reserves were victims of their own mistakes with missed targets and scoring opportunities, they lost by 35 points.
The Seniors jumped out of the box and were leading the Jets by 2 points at half time, the backline was solid only conceding goals to a couple of dubious free kicks. Unfortunately by half time we were down to 1 fit player on the bench and the signs started to show. First gamers Alby and Patty were superb and showed they belong in the side. Inaccurate goal kicking cost the team for the 2nd game in 3 weeks, kicking 1.7 in the last to the Jets 2.3. The end result a 24 point loss.
