Seniors and Reserves enjoyed their first wins of 2018 whilst a milestone in the Netball wasn't enough to get four wins.
This week C Reserve took on Springvale District Red and were obviously keen to keep the winning streak going. Welcoming some new faces to the side, Tahlia, Katrina and Roz proved to be assets from the start and the girls quickly came together to move the ball down the court as if they had been playing for weeks. Putting into practice some key strategies Bron and Jess have been teaching us in recent weeks, the girls took the lead at half time, and managed to maintain it for the rest of the game. Best on went to Han ‘Cannot Miss A Goal’ Bevis, who literally could not miss a goal. It really was a dream to watch. Han was complimented by Jules who also put on an absolute clinic in the goal circle running rings around her defender. Tahlia took too many intercepts through the mid-court to count, and the defenders in Katrina, Annie and Roz didn’t let many past them either. South Yarra took the win 62 – 18.
C grade had a special match this week, celebrating Jess Zach's 50th game for South Yarra. With a bit of a different look side, the Yarras took on a determined Doveton Eagles. With Doveton having some height up their shooting end, the Yarras battled hard to turn over ball in the mid court and defensive end to give the ball back to Jess and Emily who were working tirelessly in the ring. Mary was awarded best on for continuously contesting passes into the ring despite being out-heighted by her opponent, and she promises to work really hard on growing taller in the next couple of weeks. With an opposition player having a stormout that rivaled any we'd see on reality tv shows, Doveton's lack of team cohesion left them short a player in the last quarter. Whilst the girls went down 50-31, they can take away some positives from this game. Next game is ours girls!
After their first win last week, the B Grade girls were fiercely determined to take the court to back it up against Heatherton White. A new addition to the team this week saw Jess Porter don the GA bib. Her and Kate Shevlin were a dynamic duo, moving effortlessly around the goal circle and popping the ball up like it was weightless, which secured the lead for the Yarras at quarter time. The mid courters, Greta ‘Tentacle Arms’ Stevens, Bethany Griffiths and Gemma Mulqueen gelled together seamlessly, moving the ball down the court in a calm, collected and calculated manner, allowing the opposition to make the mistakes and capitalising on them. Changes in the second half saw Meg Howlett and Sarah Dalbosco take the court. The addition of these two provided the Yarras with fresh legs and even more determination than Trump swearing his toupee is real; securing a larger margin for the Yarras. Bronwen Rees and Mad Lennox again worked like an absolute dream team in the defensive end, putting copious amounts of pressure on Heatherton’s attacking end and continuously turning the ball over. Mad Lennox was awarded best on court for her stella man-on-man work in the ring, inevitably shutting down her GS. South Yarra 51 defeated Heatherton White 25.
A Grade had an arm wrestle of a match with Murrumbeena. A slow start saw the Yarras down by as much as 9 in the first quarter however by half time they had managed to bring the deficit back to within 5. Sharp shooting from Megan O’Hurley and great defensive pressure in the last half saw the Yarras gain the lead in the last few minutes of the final term however they weren’t able to hold onto this, eventually going down by 2 in a close match. South Yarra 44 defeated by Murrumbeena 46.
The Women’s Football team had a bye.
The Thirds on Saturday morning assembled a new-look side, with several unfamiliar faces joining some seasoned threes veterans. Despite a later than usual game time, the side seemed still half asleep in the opening minutes, and allowed Doveton to dominate the opening stages and put the first two goals on the board. Despite this, three goals in quick succession ensured that the Yarras went into the first change with a slight lead. The remainder of the match proved an arm wrestle, reflected in the difficulty both sides had scoring. Despite a tight three quarters South Yarra never surrendered their lead, and emerged with a well fought 8-point win.
The Reserves had an amazing 297 point turn-around from the previous week as they gave Hallam a 124 point hiding thanks to the contributions of Strano with 6 goals. Hardie was promoted from the Thirds and showed his brilliance with three goals. Dixon was unusually positioned in the forward line and surprised the crowd with 3 goals. In addition to the tireless work from Zach in the middle with 2 goals. Gliddon won every tap in the ruck and chimed in with a goal himself. Russell was too strong in the marking contests and kicked two goals. Whilst Lay put himself in the scorers column with two goals as well.
As they have done all year the Senior side made a solid start against Hallam. Playing the bottom side may have led to some complacency as the Hawks fought back throughout the second half. The Yarras clung on to record their first win of the year by ten points. Smithy was stingy as heck down back in his return with Scott again in our best.
