BOROUGH BOUNCE BACK TO FORM ENDING TIGERS’ WINNING RUN AT HOME
BY JUSTIN COOPER
PORT Melbourne bounced back from last round’s unexpected loss to the Frankston Dolphins, with a strong 60 point thrashing of the in-form Werribee Tigers at TEAC Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The home side started well with a 6 goal to 4 first term, as they held sway over the Tigers by 16 points at the first break.
But the real damage came in the second quarter which saw the Borough slam on 8 goals to the Tigers’ 2, giving the home side a distinct 49 point advantage going into the main break.
A spirited 6 goal to 7 comeback by the Tigers looked formidable in the third term, but the home side stuck tight to slam on 5 goals to 3 in the final term to run out 60 point victors infront of an ecstatic home crowd.
The final scoreline reading Port Melbourne 26.12 (168) to the Werribee Tigers 15.12 (108).
Players to impress for the Borough included running utility Toby Pinwill (6 goals), midfielder Chris Cain (3 goals), former Cat and Swan David Spriggs (2 goals), defender John Baird (2 goals), ruckman Dylan McLaren (1 goal) and former Bomber and Blue Cory McGrath.
Best players for the Tigers included Taghan Henderson (3 goals), Michael Barlow (3 goals), Dominic Gleeson (2 goals), Alan Obst (2 goals), ruckman Todd Goldstein (1 goal) as well as skipper James Podsiadly (2 goals).
In the reserves, the Port Melbourne side knocked off the Werribee Tigers by a pleasing 46 points.
The final scoreline reading Port Melbourne 12.13 (103) to the Werribee Tigers 8.9 (57).
In Round 17 of the VFL, Port Melbourne host rival Williamstown in an ABC-telecasted game at TEAC Oval on a Saturday afternoon while the Werribee Tigers tackle Collingwood at Princes Park, also on a Saturday afternoon.
