Seniors
Big crowd in perfect conditions greeted players from Broadie and Morningside in the feature round this week. The winner of this game to keep their chances alive for the fourth spot with Mt Gravatt, Southport and the Lions pretty well assured of finals participation. In Jack Dyer lingo the first quarter was one of two halves. Broadie dominated for the first 10 mins and was 4 goals up to zip. Josh Searl in his first game was showing a bit, Wade Dickson was treating the state CHF with contempt, Ryan Dienjes was presenting well to notch 2 off strong leads, Stewart was inspecting QANTAS landing gear, Tinker doing well across the middle and half back, while Beattie and Edwards were mixing it with anyone and everyone. At the 11 minute mark, the panthers bothered the scoreboard attendant for the first time and continued on their way to a 6 point lead at quarter time Morningside 4 6 to Broadie 4 0
Second quarter was tight also. JD found a different use for his legs as the panthers snuck one through tunnel ball style to extend their lead. Morningside bench was sounding confident just as Dienjes finsihed off some fine work by Skrinnis, Barelle and Rolfe from a stoppage. A promising drive forward was thwarted by a less than promising umpire's decision followed by some poor discipline resulting in a 50m penalty and a goal to the panthers. Their confidence was up as they went to a 17 point lead. Not to be denied Spenser collected the ball at a stoppage, gave it off to Beattie who was in everything, whose pass to Dick was followed by some clever work by Skrinis who goaled. Importantly we were able to put the next one on the board, from a Dick free kick. Attack after attack resulted in a bunch of points - Howard, Edwards, Andrews, Lyons, Beattie and Dick all featuring prominently - until Tippet goaled from a severe angle and clever Dick put us back in front at the long break. Broadie 9 4 to Morninside 8 7
The third stanza was no less a dog fight for supremacy. Joey Barelle found the wood, and Jacko decided to join Daryn Stewart as a QANTAS contractor as Tinker's direct opponent did an ACL and did not pass go as he was quickly stretchered off. It was nip and tuck with a couple to Morningside, and after a particularly hard fought bit of play by Edwards and Howard from a kick off, Deano snapped around his body from the high school pocket grandstand side to make a 2 point ball game at three quarter time. Morningside 10 11 to Broadie 10 9
Morningside started well with Broadie appearing to be defensive in decision making. Rolfey missed from a mark off a Josh Searl grasscutter while the panthers quietly extended their lead to 32 points at mid term. Hamish Dick put a couple across the face of goal and after a 4 bounce run Nathan Lyons was unlucky to have his shot touched through. The Catters were not about to chuck it in. There were some desperate exchanges in play and with Howard in the engine room and fighting to take the game over we found another couple of majors to get within 18 points. A Zorko point meant 3 straight would win it with not long on the clock. Unfortunately some argy bargy resulted in another 50m penalty goal to the panthers and the fat lady was tuning up to warble her dirge. Final score Morningside 16 12 108 def Broadie 12 13 85
Magoos
Ravaged by injuries and illness, Broadbeach took on the Morningside Panthers at Merrimac yesterday. So thin were the numbers, Tom Clough and Jacob Spackman were called upon to play despite carrying injuries that saw both ruled out of the senior team on Thursday evening. Add to this the late call up to Trav Johnson, Zane Parker and the debut of 15 year old Jackson Rolfe and you could see the task against a very strong Panthers outfit was going to be a tough one.
The game started at a lively pace with both teams attacking the ball with much gusto.
Morningside’s delivery into the forward 50 was terrific and quickly resulted in 3 straight goals. The Cats were not playing badly though. Over the
course of the next 10 minutes the Cats worked themselves in to the contest with goals to Matty Barrett and Michael Cooke. Jacob Spackman and Tom Clough were working hard in the mid field and Matty Barrett seemed to have the ball on a string. At the first break Morningside 3-0/18 led Broadbeach 2-2/14.
The second quarter saw Morningside skip away early with 3 quick goals to their full forward.
The first was a blatent push out on Travis Fraser that went undetectedand the others coming from two costly turnovers in the midfield.
A goal on the run from 50 to Spackers was a real highlight for the Cats.
It came on the end of a solid bump and pick up from Rian Denne and a good attacking lead by Cheyne Hutchinson.
Taylor Hayley was popping up all over the ground and showed some class to weave through traffic and deliver the ball forward for the Cats.
Trewy did his hammy again as another chapter of a horror return season. At half time Morningside 8-4/52 led Cats 3-3/21.
The Cats came out with confidence in the third term with the first goal of the quarter going to Spackers after a strong lead was honoured by a terrific delivery by Tails.
The Cats could have had another minutes later when Tom Clough showed some brute strength to break through a tackle and kick a hogh ball inside 50 that was duly marked by Spackers 30 out from goal. The call went against the Cats with the umpire suggesting the ball was touched in flight. Another stirling call. Bulldog was again in the play with several efforts in the forward 50 to create the turnover and a snap shot from Spackers was unlucky to miss. Morningside responded with two quick goals before Tails took a strong grab next to the
behind post and quickly handballed it to Spackers who snapped his second for the quarter. At the final break Broadbeach 5-8/38 Morningside 10-8/68.
The final quarter started as the previous three, as a real struggle. The Cats could have had two early shots on goal as Spackers was ridden in to the ground on the first two leads of the term. No free kicks awarded. Young Jackson Rolfe started to get busy on the wing getting plenty of the footy after doing some solid work for the previous two quarters. His coolness under pressure at age 15 was a highlight. Unfortunately with Trewy, Trav Fraser bothback in the sheds and injured players left on the park Morningside started to assert themselves. The panthers full forward capped off a good game kicking 5 last quarter goals to take his tally to 10 for the game. A late goal to Matty Boston after some good lead up work by Bulldog and Hutchy was the final foray for the beaten Cats. Final score –Morningside 18-11/119 def Broadbeach 6-10/46
Goal scorers were Spackers – 3, Cookey, Bosto and Matty Barrett 1 each.
Best players were Hayley, Spackman, Jason Frawley, Webby and Jackson Rolfe.
A specialmention must go to those guys who helped out despite being injured or short on match fitness, Tom Clough, Trav Johnson, Matt Barrett, Zane Parker and Trav
Fraser coming back from a shoulder injury.
All in all a good effort by the Cats.
