By Peter Booth
SENIORS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 30-18-198 def DONVALE 6-7-43
A cold, cloudy day at Donvale with the ground soft from overnight rain. Two changes at selection with Cullen and Rushton out injured and replaced by Johnson and Davidson. On match day Hall was a late withdrawal and replaced by Emley. The hightlight of the day was Matt Greig’s 10 goal s to take him to 99. The lowlight of the day was Ryan Cassidy who seriously re-injured his shoulder and will not play again this year.
The punters pal did it again, Greig with the first goal via Froud. Millhouse and Talevski soon followed then Millhouse goaled again via Mullett and Froud via Nummy. It was at this point Cassidy fell to the ground and it was evident it wasn’t just a case of a popped shoulder. Greig kicked his second then he assisted Mullett in the last goal before the break. Ross was doing all the ruck work with Hall out. At ¼ time we led 7-3 to 2-1.
We added 6 goals to 2 in the second quarter. Johnson goaled via Mullett. Mullett was having a wonderful game. Greig goaled via Froud then Bardon goaled then Greig again. The backline didn’t have a lot to do. Talevski snapped a beauty then Greig goaled via Bardon and Mullett. Better players for the half were – Mullett, Holmes, Greig, Nummy, Bardon, Webster, Bardon and Talevski. At half time we led 13-10 to 4-3.
The 3rd term produced 5 goals to 1. Millhouse and Greig goaled then Holmes goaled via Millhouse. Greig kicked his 7th via Bardon then Millhouse kicked another via a Greig miss kick. Bardon had an outstanding quarter. He was at his brilliant and dangerous best and that right boot was fully loaded. Ross and Millhouse did plenty of work along with Morse. At ¾ time we led 18-16 to 5-6.
WITH THE WIND COULD GREIG KICK 4 FOR THE 100?
Bardon kicked 2 early goals one of them via Greig. Greig kicked his 8th via Mendes and Morse quickly followed. Emley kicked 2 of the next 3 goals with Millhouse in between via Nummy. Froud goaled via Holmes and goaled again via Greig. Greig kicked the next two to finish on 99 and a daily tally of 10-5. SO FANS ALL ROADS LEAD TO LILYDALE NEXT WEEK. Better players for the half were – Bardon, Greig, Mullett, Holmes, Morse, Ross and Millhouse. Vermont victors by 155 points.

RESERVES FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 18-17-125 def DONVALE 4-13-37
Vermont was certainly short on numbers with 3 colts players lining up – Ryan, Cameron and Luke Johnson. Luke McDermott played his first game this year and a player I have never seen before Wursthorn. Despite this, the Eagles dominated the first quarter kicking 6 goals to nil Rosewarne and Ford each kicked two with singles to Bordin and Dressing. At ¼ time we led 6-3 to 0-1.
Donvale outscored us in a lack lustre 2nd term by kicking 2-5 to 2-2. Our goals came from Stewart and Ford via Cameron. Better players for the half were – Chandler, Whitchell, McLure and Ford. At half time we led 8-5 to 2-6.
We added 4 goals to 1 after the break with majors coming from Bright, Russo, Ford and Johnson. McLure was again dominating the ruck while Bordin had a terrific quarter on a wing. At ¾ time we led 12-12 to 3-9.
We kicked 6 goals to 1 in the last term. Ford kicked his 5th via Chandler who was my best player. Further goals came from Dressing via Luke Johnson, Russo and Bordin again with Johnson again in the build up. Baylis goaled then Luke Johnson capped off a good game with the last of the day. There were many better players in the half – Chandler, Bordin, McLure, Stewart, Johnson, Ford, Cameron and Gaul. Vermont comfortable winners by 88 points.
Goalkickers – Ford 5, Russo 2, Johnson 2, Rosewarne 2, Dressing 2 and Bordin 2 with singles to Bright, Stewart, and Baylis.
Coach’s Best Players – Bordin, Whitchell, Bright, Gaul and Chandler.
Coach’s Comments – It’s been a tough 6 or 7 weeks – I just told the players to go out and enjoy each others company and the footy.
COLTS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 13-20-98 def DONVALE 1-5-11
We started a bit slowly kicking only 2 goals in the opening quarter. Both goals came from Handley and Bull was starring in defence. McKernan had an exceptional quarter his work rate and intensity was magnificent. At 1/ 4 time we led 2-4 to 0-2.
In the second term Donvale’s disposal was awful. McKernan copped a heavy knock and left the ground not to return. Dore was on fire and had a terrific quarter. We kicked 7 behinds before Humphrey goaled. At ½ time we led 3-12 to 0-3.
Better players for the half were – McKernan(until injured), Dore, Rogneda, Bull and McInerney.
We kicked 4-3 after the break and kept them scoreless. McDonald and Debney each kicked 2 goals. McDonald who spent plenty of time on the beach early in the game had an immediate impact when he came on. Our back line was led by Bull and Jones.
Henderson and Rogneda were doing plenty of heavy work. At ¾ time we led 7-15 to 0-3.
We kicked 6-5 to 1-2 in the last term. McDonald kicked 2 to take his tally to 4 from half a game. Other goals came from Debney, Dore, McInerney and Dore. Siakavelis and Geraghty were good. Vermont winners by 87 points. Better players for the half were – McDonald, Rogneda, Dore, Debney, Siakavelis, Bull, Jones, Henderson and Geraghty.
Goalkickers – McDonald 4, Debney 3, Handley 2 and singles to Humphrey, McInerney, Dore and Henderson.
Coach’s Best Players – Siakavelis, Rogneda and Geraghty.
Coach’s Comments – We were a little bit flat after last week. We had a pack mentality today. There were some good individual performances - a win is a win.
