The Western Jets continued their erratic recent form, just getting over the top of bottom placed Calder Cannons by 3 points on Saturday.
The Jets started slowly with Calder making the most of the play, yet they were unable to capitalise on their good start. The Jets were able to score on the few times they went forward to lead 2.2 to 1.3 at the first change.
The second quarter, while still scrappy produced a few more goals from both teams which livened up the game. It was a bit of an arm wrestle for most of the quarter, but Western was able to extend their lead at the main break to 8 points.
The third quarter saw the Jets hit the ground running. Fitzpatrick, Haby and former Cannon Bryce Carroll were looking dangerous up forward and they had good supply from the midfield led by Schroder and Robbins. The Jets kicked 5.5 to the cannons 2.6 to take a 25 point lead into the last quarter.
But the Cannons showed why they have benchmark of the competition in recent years with a spirited last quarter fight back. Led by Vic Metro representative Dylan Joyce the Cannons closed to within a few points before goals to Koroneos and Notman stretched the margin back out to a comfortable 14 points. Yet Calder came at the Jets once again kicking two quick goals to ensure a tense final few minutes. The Jets though showed enough composure to hold off Calder and win by 3 points to go back into the top 4.
Their next game is against North Ballarat at Austar arena on Sunday at 12:00pm
