Last game of the season and again up against a side that will finish in the top 4. First time we met, Grange had a 4 goal to nothing 3rd quarter against us and that proved to be the difference at the end of the game. We were going into the match with a fairly strong team and were confident of finishing the regular season on a good note. Equal on points with Strathpine but too far behind in percentage, we were comfortable in the fact we had tied up second spot and if things went our way then maybe the chance of the minor premierships was also there.
We started the game running hard and moving the ball as well as we had all year. Brendan Foote was getting plenty of good ball delivered into him and by half time had already kicked 5 goals. Everyone was doing their job and we really didn’t have a weak link anywhere on the field. We had kicked 9 goals to half time restricting Grange to 3 points. Grange never looked like giving up and with a good full forward of their own we really didn’t want to give them a chance to think they were back in the game.
They came out hard in the second half and managed to restrict our scoring and kick a few of their own. They out-scored us by 1 goal in the 3rd quarter but we out-scored them by 1 goal in the last to finish the game by the half time margin of 9 goals. It was a great team effort and a good way to finish the regular season with some impressive signs heading into finals. Would be great to see the boys put 4 quarters together like the first 2 they played on the weekend as it was enjoyable to watch the guys do what you know they are capable of.
Best for the night were Brendan Foote (finished with 7 for the game and will be a great target for us in the finals), Dave Oldham (who once again did a good job at fullback), Dave Nobel (worked hard all night again), Mathew Wust, and Simon Purcell.
Thanks again to Dinga, Kendrick, Jeremy, Bushie, Chooka, Sally, Gregory and ferbie for coming down to help. And special thanks to Chalky for doing the running, and for Cuddles Gilbert who came down to watch and ended up running water for the boys.
With Strathpine drawing with the magpies on the weekend we managed to finish in top spot and should have the option of a home final now so congratulations to everyone involved for what has been a great season so far. With at most 3 more weeks of footy for the year we need to be switched on and getting the numbers to training we have been all year. There are still quite a few spots up for grabs going into the first week of finals so training becomes very important and will count for a lot come selection time. We will be up against Strathpine this weekend (date, time and venue still to be decided) who we have not beat this year. Will be a great test for us with the reward of a week of and a grand final berth awaiting the winner.
See you all at training.
Cheers
Gilbo.
