VERMONT v KNOX – MATCH REPORT
By Peter Booth
With 3 rounds to go the seniors and colts look set for the double chance and the reserves should hang on to 3rd spot also for the double chance. The Eagles should
finish on top in the Champion Club Award. Matt Greig has 89 goals and should complete the ton in the home and away. The players took last week’s defeat by 55 points hard and began the week with a good rehab on Monday night followed by a team meeting on Tuesday and team dinner on Thursday.
In the seniors Williams, Papillo and Frankish all injured were replaced by Webster and the two first gamers Mark Griffiths and Luke Davis. Wintry conditions prevailed with a little light rain late in the day.
SENIORS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 28-28-196 def KNOX 11-4-70
Knox kicked the first 2 goals before we hardly touched the ball. The punters pal Matt Greig obliged AGAIN with the first goal via Talevski. Waller had the job on the man mountain Adam Slater. Mendes goaled after 2 terrific efforts by Greig. Greig’s work ethic is fantastic and he seems to be getting even better with age. More goals came from Froud, Mullett via Greig and Cassidy. McCarthy was good down back and Holmes was dominating a wing. Froud kicked another via a terrific Davis shepherd. Talevski goaled via Davis then Greig capped off a lively quarter with a goal via Webster and Hall. Hall was terrific in the ruck. A very good first term with many
Players involved. I actually listed 8 who were outstanding. At ¼ time we led by 32 points.
We added 8-8 to 1 goal in the 2nd quarter. Mullett who was on fire kicked our first from an angle then Greig goaled via Bardon. The ammunition in Bardo’s lethal right foot has been a bit wet of late but was fully charged this week. Bardon goaled after receiving the QUICKEST/LIGHTNING handpass I have ever seen from Hall.Froud goaled twice via Mullett and then Nummy. Three more goals to finish the quarter from Mullett, Millhouse via Nummy and Greig. Mullett, Holmes and Bardon each had in excess of 20 possessions for the half. Better players for the half were Mullett, Bardon, Holmes, Greig, Hall, Rushton, Froud, Morse, Talevski, McCarthy and Mendes. At half time we led 16-12 to 4-2.
Like the first term Knox kicked 2 goals early before Greig goaled via Cassidy then Morse goaled via Greig. Webster who had an exceptional third quarter goaled then assisted in Froud’s next goal. Talevski who has been down on form for a couple of weeks was doing well and goaled via Mullett then Froud goaled via Bardon. During the term Millhouse was racking up his marking tally. At ¾ time we led 22-24 to 6-2.
Knox played it’s best footy in the last quarter kicking 5 goals. Froud was running around like a two year old racehorse and goaled via very strong play by Talevski. Millhouse, who was a quiet achiever all day kicked 2 goals. McCarthy goaled on the run via Cassidy then Greig goaled via Froud. Mendes kicked the last goal of the match. A special mention to Rushton who played a terrific running game from defence. Late in the quarter Hall fell heavily and will miss next week and Cullen did some damage to the top of his hamstring and will miss 2 weeks. At the end a satisfying win by 126 points. Better players for the half were Cassidy, Morse, Froud, Mullett, Millhouse. Rushton, Hall, Bardon, McCarthy and Webster (3rdQ).
Goalkickers – Froud 7, Greig 6, Millhouse 3, Mullett 3, Mendes and Talevski 2 each and singles to McCarthy, Webster, Morse, Bardon and Cassidy.
Best Players – Mullett, Froud, Morse, Rushton, Cassidy, Hall, Bardon, Holmes, Greig, McCarthy and Talevski with honourable mentions to Millhouse, Nummy and Mendes. Nearly everyone got involved at some point throughout the day.
Possessions – Mullett 38, Bardon 37, Holmes 31, Mendes and Cassidy 25, Morse 24 with Nummy, Rushton . Millhouse and Talevski 21 each.
1%- Talevski and Ross 12 each with Morse and Cassidy 8.
Marks – Holmes 13, Millhouse, Talevski and Greig 12 each and Froud 11.
Coach’s Comments – The first gamers worked for us. We worked on the things we needed to work on – the mid field and up forward. We took a step in the right direction.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 15-13-103 def KNOX 10-9-69
It was Vermont versus the veteran Lucas Slater who kicked the first 3 goals for Knox in rapid fashion. He finished with 4 for the quarter. The Eagles goals came from Dressing and Johnson. At ¼ time they led 4-1 to 2-2.
Johnson narrowed the gap for his second then Slater goaled again. The Eagles finished the quarter off strongly with Emley’s goal via Davidson then Johnson via McLure. Davidson goaled via Smith and goaled again on the siren. At half time we led 7-4 to 6-2. Better players for the half were Johnson, Setyana, Whitchell, Stewart, Smith and Davidson.
Knox regained the lead with 2 early goals with Slater kicking his 6th. Davidson, who was to have a terrific second half kicked the next two via Rosewarne then Stewart. Knox responded with another 2 including Slaters 7th. A little frustration with Smith and Gaull being sent off. At ¾ time Knox led 10-5 to 9-8.
We kicked 6 goals to nil in the last term. Dressing put us in front with a goal followed by Emley via Davidson. When Redfern kicked a long angle goal we had the game won. A special mention of a tackle laid by Setyana it was magnificent. Davidson who was a class above then after half time kicked another two then Mick Gaull goaled which brought great cheer. Vermont winners by 34 points which make it 7 in a row.
Better players for the half were Davidson, McLure, Johnson, Stewart and Rosewarne.
Goalkickers – Davidson 6, Johnson 3, Dressing 2 with singles to Gaull, Emley and Redfern.
Coach’s Best Players – McLure, Johnson, Davidson, Setyana and Whitchell.
Coach’s Comments – To get over the line by 5-6 goals was a good effort. They ran hard and exposed us early. We had a handful of blokes who really stood up.
COLTS FINAL SCORE – KNOX 10-5-65 def VERMONT 8-12-60
The game we have been waiting for the clash against the top team Knox. We got off to a dream start kicking 4-4 to nil in the first quarter. After an early arm wrestle Ryan goaled via Handley who was back after missing a couple of weeks with an injured hand. Rogneda goaled via Debney and at this stage our tackling and pressure was good. McInerney kicked a good captain’s goal then Handley finished off the quarter with a major. At ¼ time we led by 28 points and things were going along very nicely.
Then the rude awakening – like a top of the table side they responded and kicked the only 4 goals of the quarter. Our work rate dropped and when we go cold we go cold. At half time we led 4-5 to 4-2. Better players for the half were Bird, Handley, McInerney, Debney, McDonald, Dore, Rogneda and Garrados.
Some changes at the break with Cameron going to full forward, Debney to CHF and Huisman back in defence. Immediate results with Cameron hitting the post before goaling via McInerney. Knox goaled after we failed to punch from behind and they goaled again. Knox had kicked 6 of the last 7 goals. Towards the end of the quarter a couple of late goals steadied the ship. McInerney snapped a beauty then Henderson goaled via McDonald. Then McDonald goaled after the siren which was a bonus. At 3/4 time we led by 3 goals 8-9 to 6-3.
We wasted 4 or 5 definite scoring opportunities with sloppy delivery inside 50 which was to cost us the game.
Knox kicked 4 goals to nil in the final term as we fluffed around kicking short and wide and at one point I thought the goals were running east/west as we kicked everywhere except towards goal. We lost all direction. They deserved their win. Knox victors by 5 points. Better players in the 2nd half were Huisman, Henderson, McKernan and Rogneda.
Goalkickers – McInerney 2 and singles to Henderson, Handley, Ryan, McDonald, Cameron and Rogneda.
Coach’s Best Players – Henderson, Bird, Huisman, Geraghty and McInerney.
Coach’s Comments – Our decision making and disposal let us down – we missed targets – We made silly errors – we d
