WNEFL Past Players re-union
The Waranga North East Football League past players held a recent get-to gether at the Commercial Hotel in Mansfield. Organiser Don Mills was pleased as the function was again well attended with over one hundred past players from all clubs attending. A bus service from Broadford picked up along the journey. Alexandra were represented by Murray and Alan Parsons, Darrell Hedger, Alec Rowan, Doug Joyce, Tony Payne, Noel Serong whilst Ivan Fox, Robert Singline and the Coller brothers Ross and Barry representing Yarck and Thornton. Appologies were tendered from John Cameron, Bill Thompson and Terry Rodgers. Amongst the oldest attendees were Don McLeish from Yea who was the match winner against Alexandra in the 1945 grand Final and Euroa’s Les Reed who played in Geelong’s 1951 premiership team. The WNE’s last President, Avenel’s Jack Shelton was one who enjoyed the function and along with other speakers revisited the good days of football following the Second World War through until the mid seventies. This function has now become an annual event enjoyed by all who attend. Thanks must go to Don and his small band of organisers who arrange the event and also to the Commercial Hotel who provided an enjoyable counter meal to the big group.
