Last Saturday was clearly the best quality footy we have been involved in this year and we only had ourselves to blame for many costly turnovers that gave Balwyn the edge when the game was in the balance. Unfortunately, the injuries continued with Rowan Williams suffering a broken arm. We wish him a speedy recovery. The Craig Coghlan Trophy was won by Matt Greig followed by Daniel Mendes, Leigh Morse, Jimmy O’Grady, Jamie Rushton, Dan Papillo & Ryan Mullett.
Young Daniel Mendes was brought into the side and played a mighty game, his best for the Club in the Seniors. He was one of 10 ex Vermont Juniors in the line-up.
The Reserves were good after half time highlighted by a sensational mark and goal by Matt Ford and the return after bad injury by Ryan Webster. The Perry Fletcher Trophy was won by Ivan Setyana from James McClure, Luke Davis. Chris Whitchell, Mark Griffiths and Matt Ford. The Colts were chasing percentage and did a mighty job ready for the showdown today where the winner may have top spot. The Bob beard Pewter went to Lachlan McKernan from Ryan Henderson, Brendan Close, Ryan Humphrey and Michael Romas.
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Bill Bowie, who as our local Councillor and friend has supported our Club and Community sport for many years. Our condolences to his family and the East Burwood F.C.
We have junior finals at Vermont for three weeks starting next Sunday and look forward to another successful series. We then have the Amateur Finals and could do with some help on the BBQ. Ring Bob beard if you can assist on 0425713287

BALWYN - MATCH REPORT Rd14
By Peter Booth
SENIORS FINAL SCORE – BALWYN 20-14-134 def VERMONT 11-13-79
A cold but mostly fine afternoon with the ground surface good. Mendes came in for Davidson who was omitted. Balwyn had plenty to prove after their 31 goal drubbing at Vermont in round 3. After Saturday, if they can produce that style of game in September and retain much of the same personnel they look awesome. Balwyn reminded me of a VFL side playing an EFL side. We were right there until ½ time then a series of bad decisions that resulted in turnovers and goals cost us dearly.
For the punters, Morse kicked the first goal. Greig kicked our second via Holmes and a 25 penalty. Balwyn fired back with the next three before Greig kicked his second via Mullett. At ¼ time they led 4-5 to 3-4.
The tigers kicked the first goal of the second term then Froud kicked a ling goal via Cullen. Tempers flared on our half back line with spot fires igniting in 3 areas. Ross copped a yellow card and Waller replaced him at CHB. The rest of the term was goal for goal. Frankish snapped a rare one then Greig goaled on a tight angle via Holmes. When Morse goaled the margin at ½ time was 12 points in their favour, 9-7 to 7-7.
Better players for the first half were Morse who had 9 possessions in the 2nd term, Greig, Hall, Mullett. Papillo while Holmes and Williams were prominent in the 1st quarter.
Balwyn raced to 5 goal lead early in the 3rd term when they kicked the first 3 goals. The Tigers were too good all over the ground with their fast play on football and they were physical in a similar manner to us in Round 3. Our backline was under immense pressure with McCarthy doing well and Waller was trying his best. Greig kicked his 4th. Greig was one of our better players on the day but e kicked the hard ones and missed the easier ones. At ¾ time they led 13-12 to 8-10.
Greig kicked an early one in the last term via Mullett’s 2 great efforts then when we missed narrowly soon after the Balwyn floodgates opened. They kicked 7 in a row. They were on fire, confidence sky high and marking everything in sight. A couple of late goals at least got us into double figures – Millhouse via Nummy then Froud kicked his second. Balwyn home by 55 points.
Better players for the half were Mullett, Papillo, Rushton, McCarthy and Greig.
Goalkickers – Greig 5, Froud 2, Morse 2 and singles to Millhouse and Frankish.
Best Players – Mullett, Morse, Papillo, Greig, Rushton, McCarthy, Hall and Mendes.
Possessions – Mullett 27, Papillo 24, Rushton, Mendes and Bardon 23 and Morse 22.
1% - Morse 14, McCarthy and Cassidy 12, Mendes 11 with Papillo and Hall 9 each.
Coach’s Comments – David spoke to the group out on the ground after the siren and said he wants another crack at Balwyn and Noble Park. He reminded the players that in 2005 Donvale came off a 10goal defeat in round 18 to lead Vermont at half time in a grand final. It is possible to re-group.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 14-11-95 def BALWYN 6-12-48
The reserves continued their quest for the double chance with another win. Ryan Webster was back after a shoulder injury against Croydon. Emley and Johnson also back from injury. The first quarter produced only 3 goals with Webster and Dressing kicking one each. At the break we led 2-4 to 1-2. In the second quarter we kicked 4 goals to one. Webster kicked his second. Ford kicked the next 2 via Rosewarne and Davis then via Dressing. Griffiths who has hit top form in the past weeks was again terrific in defence. McLure was playing his usual reliable game in ruck and general play. When Smith soccered a goal near the siren we led by 4 goals at ½ time 6-6 to 2-6. Better players for the half were McLure, Davis, Griffiths, Chandler and Dressing.
A more even second term as we kicked 4 goals to 3. Ford goaled via Davis then Ford took a screamer and kicked his 4th. Balwyn responded with next 2 goals before Russo goaled via Whitchell and Johnson goaled after a good individual effort. At ¾ time we led 10-9 to 5-10.
We added 4 goals to one in the final term. Stewart goaled via Dressing then Rosewarne and Dressing both goaled. There was one that I missed. Vermont winners by 47 points. Better players for the half were Griffiths, Ford, McLure, Whitchell, Bordin, Davis, Setyana and Bird.
Goalkickers - Ford 4, Dressing 2, Webster 2 and singles to Rosewarne, Smith, Russo, Johnson and Stewart.
Coach’s Best Players – McLure, Davis, Setyana, Griffiths and Bird.
Coach’s Comments – Well done – the last month has been terrific – we are aiming high for the double chance.
COLTS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 30-29-209 def Balw/Templestowe 2-5-17
The opposition could only muster 16 players so it wasn’t exactly the preparation we needed for next weeks top of the table clash with Knox. However we got a game that was the main thing and we rested a few players including the captain.
I am not going to give a goal by goal account of the match as the scoreline tells the story. However it is worth reporting that our first quarter produced the worst field kicking and disposal for the year. At half time we led 15-10 to 0-2. Better players for the half were Henderson, McDonald, Cameron, Dore, Ryan, Parker and Rogneda.
We kicked 15-19 to 2-3 in the second half. Our standard of play and execution did improve. It was great to see Ryan Humphrey back after being sidelined for many weeks. A mention also to Romas and Jones who both kicked goals out of their backsides in the last quarter. Better players for the half were Henderson, McDonald, Dore, Debney, Siakavelis and Huisman. Vermont huge winners by 198 points and now the long awaited clash next week. ALL SUPPORTERS -GET TO VERMONT EARLY AND SUPPORT THE BOYS IN A BIG WAY.
Goalkickers – Henderson 4, McDonald 4, Rogneda 4, Debney 4, Ryan 3, Dore 2, Jones 2, Humphrey 2 and singles to Romas, McKernan, Garrados, Close and Johnson.
Coach’s Best Players – McKernan, Close, Humphrey and Henderson and a special mention to Michael Romas and ‘that goal’.
Coach’s Comments – We can’t take much out of a game like that – we will work on some negatives during the week – next week is the challenge of the season for us – it was good to see Ryan Humphrey make a successful return.
