NEWTOWN & Chilwell has strengthened its list with the addition of Grovedale young gun Matt Boag and Birregurra star Josh Weatherhead.
A Torquay junior, Boag arrives at Elderslie Reserve having also played with the Geelong Falcons and in the VFL Development League with Werribee.
He has spent the last two years at Burdoo Reserve under Craig McCaughan, who handed him his senior debut at Torquay in 2012.
“He’s heavily linked to a number our players through his time at the Falcons, Werribee and going to school at St Joseph’s,” McMahon said.
“He someone we see can come in and play a role for us. We know that he’s a big-bodied mid that’s featured highly best-and-fairest counts, so he’s got good GFL form.”
A local connection has helped the Eagles land Weatherhead, who was named best-on-ground in Birregurra’s Colac and District grand final win and finished third in the Saints’ best-and-fairest, as well as representing the CDFL this year.
“He has links to Newtown via the McDonald family, who are from Birregurra as well,” McMahon said.
“He’s a nuggety half back known for his hardness, his kicking skills and his competitive nature..
“We’re really excited to have another guy a similar age to Matt Boag – a 22-year-old that’s ready to step-up and have a crack at a higher level of football.”
However, McMahon has confirmed the departure of big man Padraig Lucey, with the former Geelong rookie returning home to Ireland to play Gaelic football and continue his studies.
“It’s obviously disappointing,” McMahon said. “We put a year of development into him, and it was always going to take him a year to find his feet at GFL level.
“We thought he was making progress, but we always knew there was a chance he would be heading home after one year.
“It was a risk we were prepared to take at the time.”
