The ever-growing Throng ventured to the vast playing fields of Carey for a cold and windy afternoon of winter footy. Many of the assembled had not been there for many a year and it was terrific to see the 2pm match scheduled for their main oval. It is a huge ground âÃÂàsimilar dimensions to the MCG and the boys from Bulleen were out of the blocks early and causing the Bloods some early headaches. Brew was getting plenty of it and Ferg was rebounding well from defence. Hammer and Sammy were getting plenty too. Up forward big Benny took a strong mark to convert and after Vossy got the ball to T. Brown, a Hammer handball found young Secc in the square to flick it through... Carey were having plenty of the ball and they could have been a lot closer if they had converted their chances. Brew got the ball to Jonno and Browny got it to Benny who banged on his second. Quarter time the scores were Bloods 3.1 to Carey 2.4.
The second quarter was a real slog and both teams found it hard to score and exert and influence over their opponents. Laz was unlucky with a terrific snap it took many minutes before our favourite Hyphen took a solid mark and truly converted. Paddy was doing well in the ruck and Sammy, Vossy and T.Brown were doing their usual stuff. Big Benny was annoying the daylights out of the Carey defenders and was very hard at the ball. Critta came off the bench to kick a long goal and we went to the break 5.3 to a wayward Carey 3.10.
The premiership quarter was played at break-neck speed and the scores flowed. Thommo played one of the best quarters seen for some time and took around 7 marks for the quarter. He was receiving terrific support from Macca who was gathering possessions at will. They need to as Carey banged on 4 impressive goals and were suddenly full of running. T.Brown got our first after cleverly getting himself ahead of the ball. Benny go the ball over the top to Brew, now playing up forward and he collected a 6 pointer. Benny then got a free and gave Brew another. Bourkey got a goal assist when he saw Spence take another grab and score our 4th for the quarter. The play was hard and our bodies were feeling it as we came to the huddle. Stef had to go to full back as Ferg sat out the rest of the match and more would follow.
Carey were full of chatter and comments as the final stanza started. The bloods remained focused and Thommo, playing the game of his OHAFC career, slipped forward unnoticed and marked and converted truly from the pocket... Laz was set for our second but the slippery Bullen surface was taking its toll and fortunately D. Brown handled the spill well to convert from 30 metres. Carey banged 2 on themselves and it was truly game on. BennyâÃÂÃÂs opponent needed panadol and perhaps new boots as he fumbled to give Benny another. The body toll was mounting for the Bloods and Brew hobbled off mid quarter. Benny was non fire and got it to Critta, who banged on his 2nd. The final goal of the math came from the Hyphen who floated in to take another spekky and kick truly. The boys were covered in ice post match and next weekâÃÂÃÂs bye will be very timely indeed. Best for the Bloods were Thommo, Benny, Macca, Browny and Paddy. Four points hard earned.
