ROUND 13
BOX HILL V COBURG TIGERS
BOX HILL CITY OVAL
SUNDAY 6TH JULY
Coburg travelled over to Box Hill on Sunday to take on the bottom of the ladder Hawks. However this was no easy game for the Burgers as the Hawks had shown some good form in recent weeks. Box Hill won the toss and kicked with a two-three goal breeze, but Coburg had other ideas and unlike the previous two weeks got off to a flyer.
The Burgers kicked seven straight goals in the first term; a fantastic conversation rate. Both sides had their fair share of the ball, but the burgers were far more accurate at goal, as Box Hill kicked four goals five for the term. Andy Collins and Paul Shelton were fantastic through the middle and also worked hard to help out the backs.
The Burgers took a handy thirteen point lead into quarter time and coach Jade Rawlings was very impressed with his boys efforts running into the breeze.
¼ Time: Coburg 7.0 (42) Box Hill 4.5 (29)
With the wind in the second term Coburg dominated the play, but unlike their accurate first quarter, the goal kicking went astray. The Burgers added two goals seven behinds for the term, while Box Hill could only add one goal two behinds.
Last years runner up in the best and fairest, Jarrod Silvester, was a standout deep in defence. All kicks entering Box Hills forward line near him were cut off and thumped back the other way.
Although the Burgers clearly won the quarter, a larger deficit on the scoreboard would have been more appreciated by their fans.
½ Time: Coburg 9.7 (61) Box Hill 5.7 (37)
Once again in the thirds term Coburg’s backline stood tall. Jay Schultz was courageous backing back into large packs and was well supported by his team mates, including Jarrod Silvester who had another great quarter. The pressure was fantastic and caused the Hawks to be off line with their attempts at goal, while the Burgers added another five goals for the term into the breeze.
Greg Tivendale continued on his brilliant VFL form, collecting another 33 possessions at will and contributing another two fantastic goals. With the consistent year he has had Tivendale would be polling extremely well in the vote tally for the Liston medal at the end of the year.
¾ Time: Coburg 14.8 (92) Box Hill 8.14 (62)
The scoring shots were even at three quarter time, however Coburg were the much more accurate team and led by a healthy five goals. The boys played out the last term well adding another four majors and keeping the Hawks to only one.
Kayne Pettifer kicked three for the Burgers and set up a couple more with creative vision, while Shane Edwards created excitement for the Burger fans with his explosive speed and skill.
Coburg had twelve goals kickers on Sunday, their most for the season. The boys were fantastic at sharing the ball around looking for the best option in the forward line. It just helps outline the unselfishness of the team.
The only down side to the win was an injury to defender Andrew Raines, who suffered a hamstring strain in the first term, however coach Jade Rawlings said the injury wasn’t too severe.
The Burgers are back at home this week and face Port Melbourne at ABD Group Stadium beginning at 2pm

RESERVES
The reserves had their tightest game for the season after a scare in the last quarter when the Hawks came back to get within eight points. In a tight scrappy type of game Coburg held a fairly comfortable lead all day, and managed to hold on in the final few minutes. Best players were Jo Gazzo and Dean Putt in the middle, with great support from Josh Riddle and Jake De Sousa.
It was the Burgers tenth win on the trot, however Williamstown are also unbeaten in what will be a fantastic game in two weeks time. The boys start at 11.10am again this week before the seniors.
