HAWKS FLY
The Ainslie boys made the trip down to Arctic Park (Greenway Oval) for their clash against the improving Tuggeranong Hawks and after a good win last week were expected to win and cement a place in the four. After winning the toss and kicking with what appeared to be about a 3 goal win the Tri-colours got off to a flyer dominating the stoppages and continually driving the ball forward. The forwards were finding plenty of room but once again their set shots at goal let their opponents off the hook and at quarter time Ainslie had a handy 5 goal lead which should have been 8 goals! The second quarter saw a complete reversal of the first with the Hawks gaining confidence as they peppered the goals and at half time the difference was only 8 points in favour on the Tri–colours
The second half started with Ainslie having the use of the 3 to 4 goal wind in what was going to be a big quarter in the context of the game as both side knew who ever won the premiership quarter would no doubt win the game. The Hawks running game was in full flow and with full forward Ghirardello on fire the Hawks surged ahead as undisciplined Ainslie became frustrated and their game fell apart. At three quarter time the Hawks held a match winning lead of 19 points and kicking with the aid of the breeze in the last quarter. After probably their worse quarter of football for the year the Tri–colours came out after the break and were winning possessions but too many skill errors repeatedly saw the ball turned over as panic had set in and we persisted with giving silly and undisciplined free kicks away as a far more committed and discipline Tuggeranong ran out easy winners.
The loss was probably Ainslie’s worse in the last 2 seasons and as we all know there have been some bad ones, but to be 5 goals up and everything to play for and be totally out played in the second half is a very hard pill to swallow. Hopefully the famous Tri–colours spirit will filter through this young group and they will take a leaf out of the Tuggeranong Hawks fighting spirit and come out fighting against our enemies from over the boarder this weekend!
Best players in a very disappointing display were Neely, Lewis, Stone and Tuohey.
Note – To all supporters of Ainslie Football Club please come and support this weekend in what is a huge game for the club!
