The day started with the U10s up against the ever improving Rooty Hill team. At the start of the game Rooty Hill were a couple of players short but they knew at the first break 2 teammates would arrive. The Crows gave 2 players to Rooty Hill so the game could start, a great show of sportsmanship. The Crows started the game with the centres controlling play and providing plenty of opportunities to the forwards. The Crows managed 3 goals and could have scored more some of the 5 behinds had been better kicks.
In the second term Rooty Hill stepped up and the centre contests were going 50/50. The Crows kicked an early goal but for the rest of the term it was goal for goal. The 3rd term was a real arm wrestle and mirrored the 2nd term with the Crows kicking 3 and Rooty Hill 2. The Crows managed a further 2 goals in the 4th term and held Rooty Hill scoreless. In the end the Crows had a good win but Rooty Hill stepped up and made them work very hard. Well done to both sides.
The U14s took the field as the 2nd game up and were looking to consolidate their position on the ladder. The Crows are in 4th position while Ingleburn South Campbelltown magpies were 5th.
The Crows started the game with plenty of running and were very dominate in the centre. The forwards received plenty of good ball and Sam O'Neill made sure the Crows would take a handy 3 goal lead into the first break.
The 2nd term saw the Magpies tighten up their defense and increase their intensity at the ball. The Crows stepped up a gear to match the magpies in intensity and managed to increase their lead to 4 goals at the long break. The magpies took the field in the 3rd after a loud spray from their coach so the Crows knew the 3rd term would be a challenge. The magpies had a couple of kicks on goal early in the term but could only manage behinds. The Crows kicked another goal to increase the lead while the magpies managed 5 behinds for the term.
The 4th term saw the Crows loose some of their intensity with the game won. The magpies finished off the game with a couple of easy goals while the Crows kicked one. A good result with a term on equal terms on the ladder. Other results on the day saw the Crows take 3rd position on the ladder. Well done boys.
The 3rd game of the day (U12s) saw the Crows take on Rooty Hill Power. The Crows didn't take long to show they had come to play and kicked a couple of early goals. The Crows continued to apply pressure to the Power at every contest and finished off the term to take a 6.3 lead at the first break. The Crows had wet the appetite of the crowd who were looking for a repeat of the first term. The Power worked their way back into the game and the Crows looked like a different team. The Power made every possession a contest and kicked a goal to narrow the gap. The Crows managed to kick 1.3 to maintain their lead.
The 3rd term was a mirror of the 2nd. The Power provided good contests all around the field and the Crows struggled to get the ball into scoring opportunities. The Crows added 1.2 to their total while the Power were kept quiet. Only seconds from the end of the 3rd term Cory Savage while falling to the ground hit his head/neck heavily on the ground. When Cory mentioned his neck and back had a pain a call was made fo an ambulance. Cory received a standing clap by his teammates, the Power and spectators. We can advise Cory was OK and only needed to take things easy for a week. We hope to see you back again.
The 4th quarter started when the field was cleared. The players had such a long break it was almost the same as starting a new game. The Crows showed the delay had not taken the edge off their efforts as they played some good football as they did in the first term. The crowd was pleased to see another 4 goals from the Crows but the 7 behinds will need to be better effort when they line up against the top performing teams.
The main game took a while to start with a mob of parents, siblings U14s and U16s taking the field for team selection. Eventually most found a team and the challenge between the footy jumpers and the non jumpers was ready to start. The umpires Mick Cross and Mitchell Stevens took the field with boos from the crowd and the players. A great show of respect. The game started at a furious pace and it didn't take long for the first 50metre penalty to be awarded. The ball flew from this end to that end and then that end to this end. The scoreboard turned over slowly, mainly because no-one was there to change scores. Who even cared what the score was, it looked like settling a few grudges and annoying the hell out of the opponent was more important. The umpires were kept very busy and did more running handing out 50s than they did umpiring the game.
The crowd witnessed some great skills from the parents with excellent marks and kicks. The players put in also and showed some real class at times. Michael, Dave and Mark will be looking for a repeat in this weeks games, you've been warned U14s and U16s.
At the end, who won? who care? To finish off a great game everyone headed upstairs into the rooms for some refreshments and food. A big thanks to Mark, Joanne and Trish for getting it ready.
Well that's the way it was or as I remembered it. Next game is at Cook Park 5/7 when we have all teams at home. The day starts at 8.30am with the U10s. Come and watch the Crows take on the Penrith Swans.
