Both Aspley and Springwood have been on the end of hidings in their past two round matches which bodes well for a keen contest this weekend. In their Round 7 meeting, the Pumas seemed to be control to post their first win for the season, however, a final quarter goal blitz saw the Hornets prevail.
In Round 11, a rejuvenated Burleigh posted 20 majors to run over the Hornets who scored a season low of 29 points for the game. Although scoring almost their season average of points, the Pumas were outgunned by a Wilston - Grange side trying to get their season back on track. Allan Phillips kicked 3 of the Pumas' 6 goals with Chris Collins 2 and Shane Murrihy 1 contributing to their 41 points.
Last week in Round 12, both teams were hammered again, albeit Aspley were better than the week before by registering almost 10 goals against PHC ladder front runners, Palm Beach-Currumbin. The Pumas meet a rampant Sandgate who moved back into the final 5 after posting a massive 229 points for the game. Ellery Bowman and Mark Thompson who have been models of consistency over the past few weeks, were again the best for Springwood, while late recruit, Daniel Finlay, contributed well.
In Round 13 this Saturday, the Pumas will know that after their Round 7 performance, that they can match it with Aspley. The Pumas stayed in the contest to three-quarter time and the final scoreline was certainly not an indication of proceedings for the majority of the match. Player availability hasn't been kind to the Pumas, and with Ryan Ross and Matt Shannon venturing overseas, the opportunity to press for a permanent Senior's spot is likely to be given to some new faces. Also, there's no doubt that all the players will be keen to impress their loyal supporters at home.
The Seniors' game starts at 2.00 pm following the Reserves at 12 noon.
The Under 18's are also at home this week and meet Ipswich at 2.00 pm on Sunday. With a win and a loss in their last 2 games, the Pumas will need to be at their best again to guarantee themselves a shot at the finals. Reports from their recent games have indicated they have been selling themselves short; or at least their team mates. While performances by most players have been admirable, a lack of self-discipline by some continues to plague the group. Let's hope the leadership group stand up this week and set the standard as a basis for the run into the finals.
Come on down an support the Pumas!
