ROUND 11
COBURG V CASEY SCORPIONS
SUNDAY 22ND JUNE 2008
ABD GROUP STADIUM
Coburg faced up against the Casey Scorpions this week at ABD Group Stadium. Although the Burgers were the home side Casey were moderate favourites heading into the match as they sat second on the ladder with only three losses. A large crowd attended, as it was well reported in the media that St Kilda guns Nick Dal Santo and Steven Milne were playing for Casey.
As it turned out the Scorpions were a much classier outfit on the day, running away with a fifty-three point victory.
Coburg were competitive in the first term, but Casey got on top late in the quarter and converted that onto the scoreboard creating a handy three goal buffer at the first change. Angus Graham started well and played a solid game in the ruck and around the ground, while James Keogh saw a lot of the ball in only his third game for the senior side.
¼ Time: Coburg 2.3 (15) Casey 5.3 (33)
With Cleve Hughes elevated into the Richmond side, (Coburg’s chief goal kicker for the past month), the Burgers had to change their forward line set up. Cleve Hughes actually played a fantastic game for Richmond booting 6 goals in their tight win over Port Adelaide.
After playing the majority of the season with Coburg in the back half, Jay Schultz moved up forward again, and with great success. The big man was strong in the air and finished the game with five majors, and was one of the Burgers best players.
However the second term was one of Coburg’s worst for the year. They only managed to score two goals, whilst the Scorpions helped themselves to another seven majors and a very healthy fifty point lead at the main break.
½ Time: Coburg 4.5 (29) Casey 12.7 (79)
Although the Coburg side were faced with a hefty margin running out at half time, the boys fought back well in the third term kicking six goals. They could have closed the gap even more at three quarter time had it not been for inaccurate kicking. Jarrod Silvester got on top of his opponent and cleared the ball well out of the backline.
Glen Carrick, playing in only his fourth game for the season, was fantastic for the Burgers. The little fella was often found at the bottom of a pack and was Coburg’s best player on the day. He was well supported by Nick Carnell who was his usual classy self, with a stack of clearances and tackles.
¾ Time: Coburg 10.12 (72) Casey 16.10 (106)
There was still a little sniff of a victory in the final term for the Burgers, but the Scorpions were quick to put an end to that as they finished the final term strongly with seven goals. Jay Schultz kicked 5 majors for the match, while Kayne Pettifer and Cam Howat added a couple of goals each as well.
One major positive to take out of the game was Coburg matched it with the Scorpions in the second half, only losing it by three points.
The Burgers still sit in sixth spot on the ladder with a very healthy percentage of 114% and face Frankston at Frankston Oval this Sunday beginning at 2pm; the reserves start at 11.10am.

RESERVES
The reserves continued on with their excellent season with a very comfortable xxx point win over Casey.
After another very inaccurate first quarter the Coburg boys really straightened up in the second term booting eight straight goals without a miss. The result was clearly beyond doubt after half time and the Burgers went on to record another hundred point thumping, this time winning by 126 points.
Jake De Sousa and Joe Gazzo kicked ten goals between them, while Fort Caruso was best on ground also contributing four goals.
