FULL STRENGTH SWANS FLY
The Tricolours ventured to the harbour city to meet the reigning premiers under lights at the SCG and after a good win last week and two strong showings against them in our 2 previous encounters this year the coach was quietly confident. The Swans have not been beaten on their home turf in a long time and with a full list to choose from our task was always going to be tough.
The first quarter was a real struggle with both sides hard at the ball and the accountability of both sides commendable but at the first break the Swans led by 11 points and it looked like we had a good game of football on our hands. Unfortunately the second quarter saw the Swans unleash some quality football and kick six goals to one. Their strong interchange bench was really starting to impact on the game with their fresh legs and strong bodies putting the young Tricolours under pressure causing some costly turn-overs. Special mention must go to McFarlane in the backline who was doing a great job on Swans goal kicker Nick Davis.
The third quarter saw a much more even tussle with the Tricolurs holding their own as on-ballers Neely, Montague and Wilson finding plenty of ball and the backline more than holding its own. However at three quarter time the powerful Swans still led by 49 points after being held to 1 goal for the quarter. The last quarter saw an exhausted Ainslie dig deep so they would not get completely blown out of the water and through the efforts of Neely, Bourke, Montague, Stone and the tackling and chasing of A Mathis the siren sounded with Ainslie 59 points in arrears.
It was unfortunate to have to play the Swans at full strength but our commitment could not be faulted but some of our decision making and simple skill errors were very costly.
Best players in what was a very tough day at the office were Montague, Neely, Stone, Crook and Wilson
