The Senior team earned a hard-fought win against their dogged Alex Hills opponents, overcoming a ¾ time deficit to win by 6 points.
The Pies were able to keep the ball in their half for most of the game, getting repeat inside 50s, but poor ball delivery saw them unable to translate their dominance to the scoreboard.
They made the most of their shots on goal though, scoring 12.6 – a far cry from the 10.20 they kicked the previous week.
Coomera were not playing their best football, much to the frustration of coaches and supporters alike.
Coach Jason Chants rued his team’s ability to execute skills under pressure, and stick to the structures that had led to the team’s success earlier in the season.
“Our execution of skill was particularly poor for most of the game, and our structures fell down – guys kept getting sucked to the contest,” he said.
Down by seven points at ¾ time, in what was a crucial match for Coomera’s finals hopes, the team needed to lift, and was asked to show fight, grit, and character in the final term.
“We made 6-7 position changes heading into the final term, and wanted to play with a bit more freedom, to play on where we could,” Chants said.
The attitudinal and position changes paid dividends, as the Pies booted 4.1 to Alex Hills’ 1.6 in the final term to clinch the win.
The win sees Coomera go two wins clear of 6th placed Park Ridge, as they improve to 6-5 on the season.
Heading into another must-win game this weekend against Coolangatta, the Pies’ coach said he would look to apply a similar game plan which got them over the line against Alex Hills.
“Being a smaller ground, I think we’ll look to attack a bit more, and play a bit more quickly,” he said.
The match will kick off at 1pm at Coolangatta’s home ground, Peak Oval.
