The Coomera Magpies Reserves snapped a five game losing streak after beating Alex Hills by 38 points at home on Saturday.
Coomera were in control all day, a strong first half saw them restrict Alex hills to 0.5, while Coomera piled on 6.4, to lead by 35 points at the main break.
After half time, Alex Hills tried to mount a comeback, and despite having double the inside 50s in the 3rd term, they couldn’t convert, kicking just 2.2 for the quarter.
Coomera were able to re-focus at the final change, and kept Alex Hills goalless in the 4th.
Coach Jay Powers was pleased with the game plan execution throughout the game.
“We had some more experienced guys come in who were able to help us control the tempo of the game, which is something we’ve really focussed on at training.”
Turnovers had plagued the Magpies during their losing streak, but Powers was happy with Coomera’s ball use.
“We controlled the footy really well, particularly in that first half,” Powers said.
“Our midfield with guys like Mitto and Bowen Harvey were able to give us first use, and their cleanness helped us stick to our game plan,” he said.
The win came at a cost for the Magpies though, with classy midfielder Jordan Brookes going down with a dislocated ankle seven minutes into the final quarter.
“It’s a shame for Brookesy, he’s spent the last four weeks coming back from a quad, and to do that in his first game back is a bit unlucky,” Powers said.
“But hopefully he can recover quickly, and in the meantime, guys can step up into the team and play well,” he said.
The win keeps the Magpies’ finals hopes alive, they’re one game back, and face fellow final aspirants Coolangatta this weekend.
