Child Safety Officer Appointed

Brunswick Zebras FC is pleased to announce the appointment of Shane Lucas as the club’s Child Safety Officer.

This role comes about as part of the Club’s Child Safety Strategy which the Board approved last week. From 1 January 2017 in Victoria, the Child Wellbeing and Safety Amendment Act 2015 requires sports clubs to meet “Child Safe Standards” (The Standards).  As a response, the Club has developed the required policy in line with the requirements of the State Government and Football Federation Victoria.

Shane is the CEO of Early Learning Association Australia which is a national peak body for early learning service providers (i.e. kindergartens, long-day care, etc).  Shane’s professional work gives him expertise in matters relating to child safety and the relevant legislation. His experience as a Zebras parent and Team Manager gives him the on-the-ground understanding of how our football club works.

Shane believes the club’s commitment to child safety is important: "It is the responsibility of every parent and official at the club to be aware of children's safety and to be proactive in reporting any concerns they have to the Child Safety Officer.”

Child Safety is everyone’s responsibility. So if you have any concerns regarding the safety of any of the children at our club – whether due to people or practices at the club or external to the club – please raise your concerns with Shane.  He can be contacted on 0417 308 751 or marissa.shane@live.com.au

The club will be working with coaches, team managers, players and parents to ensure they are aware of the Child Safety Policy and the obligations it places on us all t be pro-active in protecting children at the club.
