St Peter's FC formed their first Junior Girls side in 2011 - there were 19 excited girls that played in that first season, in the inaugural U12 SMJFL Competition... Fast forward 7 seasons and the Club now has in excess of 130+ girls/young women playing football, across it's 7 teams (U10s, U12s, U14s, U16s, Youth Girls) and are now the largest Club, for Junior Girls, in the SMJFL.
As the number of girls playing football has continued to grow, the Club realised that it needed to not only to continue to develop our program in the Junior ranks, but also look to build a 'pathway' to Senior Women's Football for our junior players.
The Club has explored multiple options over the last couple of years, including 'going it alone' in either the SFNL or VAFA, or partnering with another Senior Club...
After exploring these options, the SPFC Committee are proud to announce that the Club have formed a Partnership (for the 2017 Season), with the St Bede's Mentone Tigers (SBMT) Women’s side. The partnership means that the Senior Women's side will be renamed SBMT/St Peters and Centenary Park will become their 'home ground', for the remainder of the 2017 Season.
The teams training schedule, will see them split their training between Centenary Park (Tuesday nights) and there traditional facility at South Road, Mentone (Wednesday/Thursday nights).
The SBMT/St Peters Senior Women's side, had their first training session at Centenary Park on Tuesday night this week - which was conducted as a joint training session with our Youth Girls (U18).
The Partnership will enable our Youth Girls squad to have an early look at Senior Football as they will be able to play up to 5 games with the Senior Team, during the 2017 season. Many of the current Youth Girls squad, who will be playing their last season of Junior Football at SPFC this year, will then have a formal 'pathway'to Senior Football in 2018 and beyond.
The teams first Home Game is being played at Centenary Park this Saturday, 27 May 2017 at 11:40 am!!
As our Youth Girls side has a BYE this week, we have a number of our Girls who will be playing as part of the SBMT/St Peters Squad - which is very exciting for these young women, their families and the broader SPFC Club!!
Come down and be part of history - as we welcome in the next chapter in Football for Girls/Women in our local community - and cheer on some of our very own SPFC players!!
