Borough serve out Devils a thriller in Tassie
By Justin Cooper
In the wake of Daryn Cresswell’s decision to quit as coach of Tasmania mid-week, the Devils showed plenty of spirit in their home game against the in-form Port Melbourne on Saturday afternoon, but fell short by 3-points.
The Devils started very well kicking 5 goals to 3 in the opening term, as they took a handy 12 point lead into the quarter-time break.
The Borough responded well after quarter-time to set up a 5 point advantage at the main break with a 8 goal to 5 second term.
The Devils struggled in the third quarter where they kicked only 2 goals to Port’s 6, as the Borough jumped out to a 27 point buffer at the 3/4 time.
The Devils took plenty of risks to make a spirited final-quarter comeback as they slammed on 5 goals to 1, but it was not enough as the Borough went home 3-point victors.
The final scoreline reading, Tasmania 17.10 (112) defeated by Port Melbourne 18.7 (115).
Best players for the victors included 2007 Reserves Best-and-Fairest winner Sam Dwyer (5 goals), the exciting Robin Nahas (4 goals), former Bendigo Bomber Michael Dillon, utility Toby Pinwill, forward Rees Thomas (1 goal) and defender John Baird (1 goal).
Players to impress for the Devils included former Rooster Justin Hardy (7 goals), former Roo and Cat Cameron Thurley (1 goal), Ben Setchell, Nathan Street and Tim Bongetti (1 goal).
The Port Melbourne reserves had the bye this weekend.
Next week in Round 10 of the VFL competition, Port Melbourne host North Ballarat at TEAC Oval on a Saturday afternoon while Tasmania face the promising Coburg Tigers at West Park Oval, also on a Saturday afternoon.
