G’day Warriors
I’ve now been over in hot, communist Hanoi for about a month and half and I thought it was high time I send an email back to the best footyclub in Sydney.
First up I just want to say a massive congrats to the U18's and Donnie for an awesome start to the season. Last year was tough and it was a highlight of 2007 for me watching the boys from the sideline as they kicked away in the last game of the season. I’ve been checking the results and reports for all the grades every week and have been stoked to see how well you boys have been doing. And to Ranga: Mate, I hope you’re doing well and on your way back to the footy field as soon as possible.
As for Lee and Stringer’s almighty Ressies! Clearly you were all just waiting for me to leave the country to really turn it on. Every week I’m torn between great pride and jealousy as I read that 2008 really will be the year we make a full blooded charge to Grand Final Day. Really guys, excellent work and give Manly the absolute belting they’ve needed for a few years.
It’s also great to see First Grade’s been really competitive this year and are looking at a finals berth when they will no doubt be hitting their peak form just as it says in Bully’s top secret premiership plan. And it sounds like the 3rd Grade boys, with some numbers to match their endeavour, have just notched up the first win of many to come.
As for me, well I’ve made the tough decision to forgo my chance at an Australian representative career by playing for Vietnam last Saturday against an impressive Singapore Wombats line up. Sadly I’m still without a win for 2008 as the regular training and semi-regular playing Wombats ran over the top of a Swans outfit that included players from Hanoi and Saigon who had never even trained together. It was a hardfought game, especially with just 14-a-side and in the hot and humid Hanoi sun (photos and match report available at http://vietnamswans.com/). Next stop, the Asian Championships in September of this year.
Other than footy, I’ve been busier than the bar at the Ping when the Warriors are celebrating a big win. Work’s pretty full on, learning Vietnamese is near impossible, booze is fairly cheap and I’ve been trying to keep myself sane by playing every sport possible. I don’t know when I’ll return to Oz but in the meantime, I hope you boys keep on tearing up the Sydney AFL and continue with what has the potential to be a massively successful season.
Go Warriors!
