The Lismore Swans have defeated the Byron Bay Magpies in a heart stopping finish to remain on top of the Summerland AFL Ladder. The Swans kicked 14.7-91 to 11.14-80 in a courageous and outstanding comeback.
The Swans won the toss and kicked with the wind towards the club house end. The Swans burst out to a 19 point lead at the first break kicking 4 goals to 1. The second quarter commenced in similar fashion until Byron gained momentum and changed the game around kicking 7 goals to the Swans 3. The Magpies continued to drive the ball forward in the third kicking 2 early goals to set up a 29 point lead half way through the third quarter with the backline not able to stop the Magpies attacking style of football.
The Swans needed some inspiration as they were looking to suffer a big defeat. A turnover on the half backline resulted in George Massa booting the ball forward to Wes Seewald who slotted a goal lifting the side followed by another 3 goals for the term to lead by 1 goal at the last break. The Swans started the final term in the same manner they ended the third and got off to a flyer to kick the first 2 goals of the final term. The Swans backline stood up led by Simon Howard and Phil Tsourlinis and held off a determined Byron Bay in the dying minutes. The Swannies kicked 7 out of the last 8 goals of the match to win by 11 points.
Jason Bevan led the way in front of goal kicking 3 while Eddie Burton, Mitch Grivins, Wesley Seewald and George Massa kicked 2 each and singles went to Dylan Brooks, Josh Mapstone, and Nathan Box.
Best a field were Mitch Grivins, Josh Mapstone, Simon Howard, Phil Tsourlinis, Angus Legoe and Jason Bevan.
