Seniors:
Round 7 saw North Brunswick back at home hosting old foes Albert Park in what was a crucial game for both sides. Albert Park went in sitting just outside the ‘five’ with 3 wins and 3 losses with a chance to close the gap on the top teams, whilst North Brunswick were desperate to pick themselves off the bottom with its first win and get some confidence back into the group with that ‘winning feeling’.
So the scene was set and with the sun shining and a very slight breeze to kick with in the first term, North Brunswick dominated the play. Unfortunately the North boys couldn’t make us much impact on the scoreboard as they’d have liked but still took the ascendancy at quarter time – 2.4.16 to 1.1.7.
To this point Stuey Hearn was on fire, not only getting the ball – but also laying some big tackles. Aside form that, the forwards were presenting well with ‘Moose’, Jarrod Ford and Roger Allen getting on the end of good passes.
In the second quarter, Albert Park responded strongly and began to make the play. Their three goal term gave them the lead by 8 points at half time – but North Brunswick defenders Sorleto, Harkins and Adams had limited the damage and the game remained anyone’s.
The second half, second half was a see-sawing affair with the lead changing hands a number of times. Ruckman Ben Williams found a couple of goals and Jarrod Ford snapped a beauty as North surged ahead. With a 13 points advantage, the last five minutes were tense times as the ball stayed in Albert Park’s forward half for most of the time…
However, North Brunswick was able to hang on for a great win, the first of many we hope – and the first taste of success at North Brunswick for Senior coach, Joe D’Angelo.
Let’s hope we can back up this performance versus Kew this week, who are currently sitting third.
North Brunswick 10.12.72 DEFEATED Albert Park 8.11.59
Goal Kickers: J. Boudoloh 3, R. Allen 2, B. Williams 2, D. Briffa, D. Manoukian, J. Ford
RESERVES:
In the early game, the North Brunswick reserves were keen to get back on the winners list after having an uncharacteristic 2 losses on the trot. However, Albert Park made all the running early with 3 first quarter goals to one to the Nicholson St end.
In the second quarter, the North boys responded with three goals of their own with the re-invented Simon Adair ‘Dunstall-like’ up forward. Troy Geary and the skipper –Ackland began to take control in the midfield and Lukey Spano was productive with some searching runs down the ‘members’ wing.
In the second half, the Albert Park ressies were very hard to shake but a determined North Brunswick outfit was able to grab the 4 points – winning by 8 points. Michael Bermingham was crucial in defence in the dying moments, and may have found his niche as a speedy defender and he was ably supported by veteran Nick Giavanogulou.
This week North Brunswick play Kew in what should be a tough encounter. Game starts at 11:40 at Allard Park.
