The Hay Lions Under 17.5s travelled to Macorna as the only Hay football side playing on Saturday and found themselves struggling from the first bounce as Macorna came out ready to play, kicking the first goal and putting Hay on the back foot. With a strong cross wind making kicking difficult and tough for the rookie boundary umpire, Hay struggled to maintain possession and with a lack of pressure, were kept in the game largely by the efforts of Tim Zambon and Jock Crighton, seeing the first quarter finish with a slight lead to Hay of 2 goals to 1. The second quarter saw a stronger focus on team work and with Tom Schiller and Hugh Crighton who played his best game for the 17s, getting on top in the midfield battle and Ben Arandt starting to dominate up forward, allowing forwards Noah Hey, Tom Christensen and Adrian Pascoe to create scoring opportunities. At half time Hay held a 6 goal to 2 lead but were playing better football. The third quarter saw Hay completely dominate kicking 7 unanswered goals with Dylan Lund a strong focal point at full forward, Ben Marshall dangerous on a half forward flank, Ben Eade contesting whenever the ball came his way and the half back line of Kane Johnson, Monte Barnes and Jimmy McKenzie repelling anything that came into Hays defence, rebounding the ball back into the forward line. The last quarter saw Jack Miller move into the midfield and get plenty of the footy, Ferg Cattanach and Angus Gardiner were dangerous around the goals, and Ty Morris continued to run hard. Harley Curtis who had been good in defence all game continued to beat his man and drove the ball out of Hay’s defence with damaging runs. Despite the slow start the final score saw Hay run out comfortable winners. Score: Hay 18.8.116 to Macorna 3.1.19. Goal Kickers: Dylan Lund 7, Tim Zambon 3, Ben Arandt 2, Ferg Cattanach, Jock Crighton, Tom Christensen, Jack Miller, Tom Schiller and Hugh Crighton. Better players: Tim Zambon, Dylan Lund, Jock Crighton, Ben Arandt, Harley Curtis and Hugh Crighton.
Hay 53 def Macorna 38
After a 2 week break, Hay came out firing to take the lead by 3 goals in the first quarter.
They carried on their consistent form, with Macorna only gaining a few goals and Hay increasing their lead by 6 goals at half time.
After some positional changes, Hay upped their defensive pressure with Ellie Hicks (Highway Inn Motel) cutting off the space available for the opposition attackers. The hard working Gemma Tassel (North Deniliquin Steel) provided the vital connection from the defensive turnovers to the attack, allowing Katie Arandt (Morrison Shearing) the opportunity to convert some nice goals and finish the game with a lead of 15 goals.
