Everything was dandy for the Yarras!
In B Reserve's opening round, they lost 12 to 24 in a high pressured game. Keeping nearly level for three quarters, the girls learnt to work together cohesively to feed the ball down the court. Laura Carroll was brilliant deep in defence, earning best on court with countless intercepts. With many positives to take away from the game, the girls are keen to build on their performance and are ready to take on the competition next game.
The B Grade netballers had a strong start against Mount Waverly. The connections in the teams showed a huge improvement from round one from the start. Zaita Anderson was welcomed back to playing with open arms. She created lots of turnovers and was always an option when moving the ball down the court. This outstanding effort earned her best on court. Hannah Lyon's confidence in goals improved as the game continued. Caitlan O'Brien (the Dutchess Of Defence) showed excellent body position in the defensive end. A disappointing 3rd quarter saw a strong lead slip and the B grade girls narrowly lost by 3 goals.
A Reserve came home with a great win in round 2 against East Brighton on Friday night. The team continued to gel together well with some great attacking passing and really solid defence. Candice, Tamara and Bron really set up the win in defence. In her first game of the season, Woiwod absolutely nailed it, by shooting 36 goals! With some great drives and accurate shooting Jules was a very deserving best on court. Looking forward to building on the first win of the season. South Yarra 53 - East Brighton 31.
A Grade welcomed their first win of the season with a big margin over Carrum Patterson Lakes. The team showed control, patience and accuracy to have the edge throughout the whole game. Steph, Jess and Erin opened the court up and made their attacking skills look effortless. Maggie, Caz, Katrina and Hoges had turnover after turnover. There were however lapses in intensity and team talk which gives us the ability to keep improving. Jess Beurckner in her first game of the season deceived the defence on many occasions providing a target right under the post! She shot 25 goals. Her accuracy and consistency saw her awarded our best on court. SYFNC 43 CPL 12
A seventeen man side travelled to Cheltenham for their first game of the 2017 campaign. Despite being undermanned, there was a really good mix of returning and new players and the chemistry was evident with the Yarra's matching it with the home side and they even held a slight two point advantage at half time. However, with an injury to Roddy and the lack of numbers Cheltenham pulled away in the third term and the Yarras weren't able to overcome the deficit in the last term, eventually going down by 34 points. Better players for the Yarras were the Jakes (Faulkenberg & Bertone), Will Quince was of Goldstein importance and Jayden Cameron snagged a few. Next week the Thirds will be out to exact revenge on Black Rock, who last year, unfairly stacked their side to extinguish the Thirds chances of playing finals.
The Reserves held a fifteen point lead at half-time which didn’t show how well the Yarras were playing. However, the Yarras were far more intense and worked together within the team’s game plan to produce a far better second half kicking 13.10 whilst restricting Dandenong to only 3 goals. Buckets kicked an accurate 8 goals and two points, with assistance from Kindred with 3.6 and Lange 3.1. It seemed that the Yarras had more avenues of attack than North Korea. The midfield set up looked like a training drill as it all fell into place. The Yarras thrived on the beautifully maintained Greaves Reserve winning 147 to 56.
On what was a lovely afternoon for football the Yarras took on the Redlegs. The boys were primed to notch up their second win to start the season. The Yarras had a majority of the play in the first half but couldn’t put Dandy away. Eamon was again the number one ruckman on the ground giving the mids, Bender and Steg first use of the ball. The forward line kicked in to gear in the second half with Tmac, Taz and Brodie working together magnificently to kick 5 goals each. The Department of Defence (D.O.D.) set their target to one goal a quarter and achieved this keeping Dandy to 4 goals for the game. In the end the Yarras won the day by 116 points.
The Yarras are still looking for some junior footballers and Auskickers. If you know someone that is interested, please contact Owen on 0409 149 120.
The Yarras welcome all past players, members and supporters to the Den on Saturday, 29th April 2017 in the Commemorative Round in a triple header against BlackRock.
