MATCH REPORT – VERMONT v NOBLE PARK
By Peter Booth
SENIORS FINAL SCORE – NOBLE PARK 9-9-63 def VERMONT 7-14-56
Although we lost I was very proud of the depleted team and was more encouraged than disappointed. In came M.Cullen, Rushton and Dorbolo replacing the injured Nummy and Papillo while Morse was unavailable. A late drama as Williams pulled out at 2pm to be replaced by Kyle Emley who had played a full game in the reserves. Tom Davidson played 3 quarters in the reserves as he strives for fitness. We lost Dinneen in the first term with a serious lower leg injury. Then Brad Cullen who had to get treatment and returned hobbling on one leg and late in the game Bardon could hardly walk. Brad Hall struggled for 2 quarters with a back related injury and could not play after half time, Televski also had a leg injury, but had to stay on because there was no one else. Given all these circumstances Noble Park has a chance to blow us away but the final margin was only 7 points.
Greig again provided the punters with the first goal from the first centre break. Mullett kicked the next via Bardon. Disaster struck when Dinneen went off. He will know the extent of the in jury on Monday afternoon. NP kicked the next two goals. It was a cold wintry day but the surface was good. Talevski goaled via Froud. Talevski had a purple patch doing the forward rucking. NP kicked the last 2 goals of the quarter to lead by a goal at ¼ time.
Mullett opened the 2nd term with a goal on the run and when Bardon goaled we were in front but not for long as NP kicked 2 more. They we getting their goals with ridiculous ease as our players ran over and past the ball in the slippery conditions.
At half tine NP led 6-5-41 to 5-9-39. Better players for the half were – Mullett, Holmes, Bardon, O’Grady and Talevski
NP slammed on 2 early goals at the start of the 3rd quarter and looked as if they would give us a nice touch up. Greig snapped his second after a build from Mullett and Froud. I kept waiting for the NP floodgates to open but out backline led by McCarthy and O’Grady did a wonderful job of spoiling and harassing. Ross was absolutely brilliant in the ruck all through the 2nd half winning nearly every tap. At ¾ time NP led by 10 points – 8-8-56 to 6-10-46.
Each team kicked only 1 goal in the last quarter. There was no score for 11 minutes as the ball travelled between the two half back lines. NP goaled after 12 minutes which gave them a match winning buffer of 13 points in the conditions. Froud kicked the goal of the day grabbing the ball in the centre, chancing 2 bounces in the wet and kicked a beauty from half forward. Better players for the half were Mullett, Ross and most of the back half. NP by 7 points.
Goalkickers – Greig and Mullett 2 with singles to Talevski, Froud and Bardon.
Best players – Mullett, Ross, O’Grady McCarthy, Holmes, Bardon, Millhouse and Webster.
Possessions – Mullett 33, Bardon 24, Holmes 23, Rushton and O’Grady 18 and Millhouse 17.
1% - McCarthy 22, Dorbolo and Webster 11 and Bardon 9.
Coach’s Comments – Our man power was down. He praised Emley for playing both games. Our ball use was poor with our skills down.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 13-11-89 def Noble Park 5-8-38
The reserves made it 2 in a row and are on their way. Captain Matt Ford will not play again this year because of a career with the fire brigade. 3 goals to nil in the 1st quarter through Bright, Dressing vis Luke Davis and Rosewarne after a good tackle. We failed to score in the 2nd term while NP kicked 2 goals. Davidson was showing his class although at one stage did too much only to be run down from behind. At half time we led 3-3-21 to 2-4-16. Better players for the half were – Davidson, Emley and Bright.
What a different side in the 2nd half kicking 7 goals to 1. Conroy goaled via Whitchell. Luke Davis snapped a beauty then repeated the dose this time under immense pressure. Bordin goaled then Luke Davis kicked his 3rd for the term via Davidson. Dressing and Rosewarne rounded off the quarter with majors. Players who were quiet in the first half really shone especially Luke Davis, Stewart, Bordin, McLure and Balis. At ¾ time we led 10-9-69 to 3-5-29
We kicked 3 goals to 2 in the last quarter. The first came from Rosewarne via Bright, then Bright via Conroy then Balis via McLure. Vermont winning comfortably by 51 points. Better players in the 2nd half were Luke Davis, McLure, Conroy, Ilott, Bordin and Stewart.
Goalkickers – L.Davis and Rosewarne 3, Dressing, Bright 2 and singles to Balis, Bordin and Conroy.
Coach’s Best Players – McLure, L.Davis, Emley, Bordin, Johnson and Stewart.
Coach’s Comments – We got our reward for effort. We are getting better each week. Last year’s under 18’s now playing reserves footy are fantastic.
COLTS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 10-15-75 def NOBLE PARK 3-6-24
It was a tight first quarter. It took 10 minutes for the first goal which came from a Ryan snap. Henderson goaled via Dore then NP kicked one late. Bull was fantastic down back along with Dore and Rogneda in the middle. The coach was not happy at the break we could hear him from the grandstand.
We kicked 3 goals to 1 in the 2nd quarter. Ryan goaled via Henderson Ryan kicked another this time via Humphrey and a brilliant second effort by Bird. We looked to be well on top this quarter. Debney goaled via Quon and Handley. Better players for the half were – Bull, Henderson, Dore, Bird, Jones, Rogneda, Quon, McDonald and Hazelwood. At ½ time we led 5-4-34 to 2-3-15.
We added 3 goals to 1 in the 3rd term to take a stranglehold on the result. Dore snapped a beauty. Henderson goaled via McDonald then McDonald scored via Geraghty. During this period NP goaled far too easily. Handley, Dore Setyana and McDonald were among many contributors.
In the last term we kicked 2 goals to nil. It was a lack lustre start before Debney goaled via Dore and Handley. McKernen kicked our next via Murphy. V ermont winning by 51 points. Better players for the half were – Dore, Bull, McDonald, Rogneda, Huisman, Quon, Handley and Jones.
