Thirds Match Report – Round 06
With a total of 12 players unavailable either through injury or family commitments and the fact we made 11 changes to the team this week, it was always going to be hard to emulate the same effort as last week. Even though we managed to get two quality players in Justin Fromm and Erin Franklin back on the paddock it was hard to generate the required team work. That combined with the fact that Murrumbidgee was a lot taller and their preparedness to keep running made it very hard to apply any consistent pressure.
As soon as everyone lined up on each other in the 1st Quarter we realised we were in for a tough day at the office as we were smaller in height and body size in most positions on the ground. Murrumbidgee started running hard and stamped their authority from the first bounce and we were not physical enough in the contests. When we did attack it looked okay, but simple skill errors let us down and we did not work hard enough in the defensive direction. For the 2nd Qtr we spent most of the time still under the pump, as Murrumbidgee’s delivery to their forwards was excellent, but our backline kept putting in and manage to create a few turnovers, but we found it very difficult to get back to our HF line as decision making and kicking continued to let us down.
For the 3rd Quarter we tried to lift our work rate, but so did Murrumbidgee, so it was more of the same hard work for us. It was a credit to the on-ballers persistence that in the 4th Quarter we actually won our fair share of centre breaks and had a couple of good runs into our fwd line, but once again, not working hard enough when the ball went back the other direction really hurt us.
