The 2017 season is now underway with Round 1 completed. The Mustangs travelled to Mulgrave last week in what started out as summer like conditions. The reserves hit the field with a good blend of youth and experience and, although conceding the first goal of the game, went on to kick the next 12. We relaxed a bit in the final term but still went on to record a strong 82 point win. Old stagers, Fordy and Dimma, had a field day up forward finishing with six goals each while the youngest player in the team, Lachie McGee was voted best on ground. Others in the best were Aussie Sutherland, Blake Daniell and Peter Wall.
By the time the Seniors ran out there was a four-goal wind favouring one end, which Mulgrave kicked with in the first term, leading the Mustangs to a 4 goal deficit at quarter time. We were then able to dominate the second and third quarters with a 5 goal lead at the last break. Melbourne’s weather did what it does best and changed completely, including the wind direction, so that we ended up kicking against the strengthening wind in the final term. Our lead was being whittled away but thankfully we hung on by 4 points at the final siren. Jordy Roth was good up forward with 4 goals and James McManus earned BOG honours. Others to show out were Slattery, S. McManus, Egan, Noonan & Jordan. Thanks to everyone who dug deep at the Player Auction. We took a record amount. This weekend we host neighbors, Lilydale, in the Anzac clash in what should be a great contest. GO MUSTANGS!!!
