MATCH REPORT – VERMONT v DONVALE
By Peter Booth.
What a huge scoring day 97-60 to 14-11 across the 3 games plus the birthday boy Matt Greig and the new individual goalkicking record of 15. It was great to have Ryan Mullett and Kris Bardon speak before the game at the Eagletonians lunch. Guests included members of our Colts team with Clinton Jones, Cameron Dore and Scott Cameron saying a few words. Nummy and Mendes returned for Neil and Cassidy. The good news is Ryan Cassidy should be back in mid June. It was always going to be hard matching last week’s intensity against Balwyn but the team did a fantastic job. They could have gone through the motions and won by a nice 10 goals or so but they really had a dip. We are a game ahead at the top of the ladder and plenty of percentage if needed.
SENIORS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 37-19-241 def DONVALE 4-7-31
It was nerve wracking for those with first goal. 5 players missed shots before Mullett kicked a long one. Greig gave a hint of what was to come with the next 5 goals. Most of the goals were kicked inside the goal square. Bardon who had a fantastic first term goaled after a pass from Holmes. After a slow start on the scoreboard we finished the quarter with 7-9 to 1-2. Holmes, Greig, Bardon and Mullett starred early.
Donvale kicked the first goal of the 2nd quarter. Bardon kicked a class goal on the run from Greig. Millhouse kicked 2 goals, the first via Bardon and the 2nd via Holmes. Mullett goaled then Froud goaled from Millhouse. I made a note that for periods in the 2nd term the standard of play was not outstanding from both sides. Talevski gave to Holmes who goaled before the siren. Brad Cullen, Hall and O’Grady were good. Better players for the first half were – Bardon, Mullett, Holmes, B.Cullen, Williams, Greig and O’Grady. At half time we led 13-11-89 to 4-5-29.
The second half was a total demolition by Vermont kicking 26-8 to just 2 behinds.
Talevski kicked a long goal, Greig kicked his 6th then a typical on the run goal from Froud after a give from Greig. Hall was terrific playing a kick behind the play. Greig kicked another via Morse this time. A couple of good team goals firstly by Morse after a build up by O’Grady and Brad Cullen then Talevski after fin e play by Dinneen and Mullett. Ross came in to the ruck a did very well while Holmes kicked 4 of the next 5 goals. Talevski kicked the other. Holmes and Brad Cullen were outstanding. At ¾ time we led by 20 goals.
In the last quarter we kicked 13 goals to nil. Greig goaled via Bardon then O’Grady kicked a rare goal via Dinneen. O’Grady kicked his goal because all the Donvale players were in our half. Talevski kicked the next 2 and then came the Matty Greig show. We were not thinking of records at this stage but all of a sudden it was on. Greig kicked the next 5 goals to equal the club record of 13 and with 7 minutes to go it was likely the record would be broken. After 3 nervous misses Greig kicked goal number 14 via a pass from Talevski. Terrific unselfish play Kire who was within range but he signalled Greig to leads and found him with the pass. Greig kicked his 15th to really put the icing on the cake then Dinneen kicked the last goal of the match via Williams and Greig. Needless to say the backmen had a fairly easy day but Frankish was as tough as usual. The Eagles winning by a massive 210 points. Better players for the half were – Greig, Bardon, Holmes, Morse, Mullett, Dinneen, Talevski, Hall, Frankish and Ross and a special mention to Webster who is a quiet achiever.
Goalkickers – Greig 15, Holmes and Talevski 5 each, Millhouse, Mullett, Froud, Morse and Bardon 2 each with singles to O’Grady and Dinneen.
Best Players - Greig, Bardon, Mullett, Holmes, B.Cullen, Morse, Talevski, Hall, O’Grady, Dinneen and Frankish with a mention to Ross for his second half.
Possessions – Holmes and Bardon 39, Mullett 29, Dinneen 24, Greig 23, Morse and Webster 20. Greig took 14 marks while Holmes and Talevski took 12 each.
1%- Mullett and Dinneen 16 each, Mendes 13.
The coach didn’t comment - he left that the Matt Greig who thanked his team mates for letting him get on the end of a few to set the record.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 38-21-249 def DONVALE 1-1-7
An absolute whitewash – I don’t think it is necessary to give a goal by goal account as the scoreboard tells the story. Rushton was outstanding with 34 possessions. Others to play well included Emley, Dorbolo, McLure, Ilott, Chandler, Conroy and Luke Davis. A Special mention to Ford, Smith and Stow. Stow for his 2nd half.
Goalkickers – Ford 6, Rushton and Smith and Emley 4 each, Dressing, Chandler and Rosewarne 3 each, Griffiths, Stow and Dorbolo 2 each and singles to Bordin, Bird, Mariniello, Conroy and Stewart.
Coach’s Best Players – Rushton, Emley, Luke Davis, Conroy, Dorbolo and Chandler.
Coach’s Comments – Well done – the back line, on ballers and forwards were all good. Having 15 different foal kickers was fantastic.
COLTS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 22-20-152 def DONVALE 9-3-57
At least this game was not a wipe out like the other two. It was a pretty competitive first quarter. Donvale kicked the first goal. McKernan kicked our first via Siakavelis and Debney. Dore scored our next two the first via Johnson after a good backline switch then the next after a strong build from Cameron, Rogneda and McDonald. McDonald then goaled via McKernan. Donvale kicked 3 of the next 5 goals with Vermont’s two coming from a Rogneda snap and Murphy after a terrific tackle. Although we had 11 scoring shots to 4 at ¼ time it was game on at 6-5 to 4-0.
We kicked 6 goals to 2 in the 2nd quarter to seal the outcome. Debney goaled first via Geraghty. Rogneda started to control the midfield. Debney kicked our next 2 via Huisman and a free kick. A couple of good snaps from Siakavelis and Geraghty. Jones and Johnson were grand in defence and Taig dominated the ruck. Huisman via Henderson kicked our last goal of the quarter before Donvale kicked the last 2. At half time we led 12-8 to 6-1.
Better players for the half were – Rogneda, Bull, Dore, Debney, Siakavelis, Geraghty, McDonald, Jones, Johnson and Bird.
In the 3rd quarter we kicked 6 goals to 1. Ryan goaled after a Bird great second effort. McDonald who is having a good year goaled via Dore. Handley goaled via Dore. Cameron Dore is the Kris Bardon of the colt’s with his delivery to other players plus his ability to goal himself. Luke Johnson made a fantastic defensive save on the goal line. Ryan kicked his 2nd for the term via Carrados and Dore then Debney and Bird finished off the quarter with late goals. At ¾ time we led 18-12 to 7-2.
We kicked a modest 4 goals to 2 in the final term. Handley’s goal came from a wonderful team effort by Johnson, Jones, Siakavelis and Rogneda. Debney kicked our last 3 goals the last via Bird. A good win by 95 points. Better players for the half were Dore, Debney, Bull, Ryan, Siakavelis and Bird.
Goalkickers – Debney 7, Dore, McDonald, Ryan and Handley 2 each with singles to McKernan, Rogneda, Murphy, Siakavelis, Geraghty, Huisman and Bird.
Coach’s Best Players – Debney, Johnson, Bull, Geraghty and Taig.
Coach’s Comments – We had 42 shots at goal we need to convert better. Our forward structure needs improving. We had no passengers today, it was fantastic performance. Greg paid a special tribute to the games of Johnson, Geraghty and Debney.
