The Hay Lions footballers enjoyed an unprecedented day of success on Saturday, registering four comprehensive wins across all grades against the Macorna Tigers. In perfect conditions and playing on a pristine Number Two Oval, the Lions collected four wins with a combined total margin of 400 points over the day.
The Seniors got their first win of the year by demolishing the Tigers by 166 points. Needing to start well following a tough loss last week, the Lions moved the ball with purpose from the opening bounce. With the midfield on top and a potent forward line being lead by new recruit Lachie Armstrong, it was only some wayward kicking that prevented the Lions from amassing a lead greater than the six goal buffer established at quarter time.
Kicking with the breeze in the second, the Lions took total control of the contest and put the result beyond doubt. Jermaine Dixon was playing a huge role in the middle and Jackson Ferguson proved a dangerous target in the forward line, slotting goals from everywhere. Kicking nine goals to three for the stanza, the margin was out to 77 points at the long change
The third quarter was much of the same as the Lions kicked another nine goals for the quarter. Gus McSweyn was a stand out in defence as he harassed and repelled every Macorna attack. It was only a matter of how many when the Tigers lost a player for 15 minutes for dissent and with a quarter to go the Lions led by 120 points.
As the match petered out, it provided an opportunity for a few more Lions players to get onto the scoreboard. The highlight being a brilliant effort from McSweyn as he intercepted a Tigers entry foray, took two bounces and bombed a goal home from 55 metres to the delight of the strong home crowd. The final margin of 166 points will be a welcome percentage boost for the Lions, while the final score of 31.20.206 was the biggest score line many long term supporters could recall.
Ferguson finished with 10 goals while Armstrong bagged five majors to both be amongst the Lions best. Jason Henderson, Hugh McLean, Dixon and McSweyn were also stand outs fro the home side but this was complete team effort in which 15 players kicked goals.

With fellow youngster Zac Fitzpatrick producing a live wire game up forward kicking six goals and Sam Lugsdin dominating the ruck, the Lions were never troubled. Aidan Mullins and Matt Ward was both influential in the midfield and with a growing presence of young players coming through in Dylan Lund, Kane Johnston, Noah Hey and Isaac Wilson, the Reserves have plenty of potential this season.
